Renowned voice actor Shimono Hiro and internationally recognised anime creator The Anime Man are set to appear on “Anime Journal,” a special programme from NHK World JAPAN, broadcasting on 14 October.
About Anime Journal
“Anime Journal” is a programme dedicated to the latest news and trends surrounding Japanese animation’s global rise, incorporating the voices and perspectives of anime fans from around the world.
What to Expect
Shimono Hiro, The Anime Man, and NHK announcer Asada Haruna will sit down together to discuss a range of topics, including:
- Anime titles that captured worldwide attention during the first half of the year
- Viewer preferences for subtitled versus dubbed content
- Reactions from international audiences to Japanese anime
The programme will also take a deeper look at how translators tackled Akanebana shi (あかね噺), an anime centred on rakugo — Japan’s traditional solo storytelling art — exploring the unique challenges of bringing that cultural form to a global audience.
Comment from The Anime Man
“It was so much fun talking about the wonderful world of anime with both of them! I’ve been a fan of Shimono-san for a long time, so being able to talk together about anime — a culture we both love and are passionate about — was a truly honourable and precious experience.”

The programme will be broadcast and streamed to 160 countries and regions worldwide. Viewers in Japan can watch simultaneously via the official NHK World JAPAN website and app. A catch-up streaming service will also be available, and the programme will air on select cable television channels within Japan.
