October 5 is World Teachers’ Day, a date established by UNESCO, and to mark the occasion anime news site Anime!Anime! ran its annual reader poll asking: “Which anime teacher character comes to mind first?” The survey ran from September 29 to October 2, 2026, collecting 267 responses. Respondents were approximately 45% male and 55% female, with the largest age group being 19 and under (about 35%), followed by those in their 30s (about 25%).
No. 1 — Gojo Satoru, Jujutsu Kaisen
Gojo Satoru took the top spot with roughly 16% of the vote, climbing from second place in last year’s poll. A teacher at Tokyo Jujutsu High, he is widely regarded as the most powerful sorcerer of the modern era and serves as a mentor to protagonist Yuji Itadori and other young sorcerers.
Readers praised him on both fronts: “He usually seems carefree and his students are often exasperated, but his dedication to raising the next generation shows the responsibility he carries as the strongest sorcerer,” wrote one voter. Another added: “The gap between his overwhelming power and his breezy attitude is irresistible — I’d love to sit in on one of Gojo-sensei’s classes!”
No. 2 — Koro-sensei, Assassination Classroom
Koro-sensei slipped to second place with around 14% of the vote after topping the chart last year. The mysterious super-creature serves as homeroom teacher for Class 3-E at Kunugigaoka Junior High — a class whose students are also tasked with assassinating him.
One reader explained: “His name, coined by Kayano Kaede to mean ‘the teacher who cannot be killed,’ says it all. While PE is handled by Karasuma-sensei and English conversation by Irina-sensei, Koro-sensei covers a wide range of subjects and tailors his teaching to each student’s ability and personality. That energy is incredible!” Fans also cheered the upcoming 2026 theatrical film Assassination Classroom: Everyone’s Time, with one commenting: “Seeing Koro-sensei move in animation again after so long was deeply moving, and the theme song ‘Teacher’ perfectly captures the bond between him and his students.”
No. 3 — Doi Hansuke, Nintama Rantaro
Doi Hansuke secured third place for the second consecutive year with about 5% of the vote. He is the subject teacher for first-year Class Ha at Ninja Academy, responsible for guiding Rantaro, Kirimaru, Shinbe, and the rest of the colorful ninja trainees.
Fans highlighted his enduring appeal: “The image that always comes to mind is Doi-sensei getting run ragged by his students and yelling, ‘I already taught you this!’ I love his kindness — no matter how much he suffers, he never gives up on them.” Others noted his dramatic side: “The TV anime is full of comedy, but in the theatrical film Nintama Rantaro: Dokutake Ninja Corps’ Greatest Strategist, his serious expression is genuinely thrilling. It’s no wonder he’s called a ‘first-love killer.'”
