Development History

Type-Moon studio BB first announced the game in July 2020 to mark the 10th anniversary of the original Fate/Extra. The title was originally slated for a 2025 release, later pushed to spring of this year, before being delayed indefinitely after Notes — the Type-Moon creative circle’s official corporate entity — and Bandai Namco Entertainment mutually agreed for the latter to withdraw from publishing. Aniplex has since stepped in as publisher.

During development, director and planner Kazuya Nino — who also served as director of Type-Moon studio BB — departed the studio for personal reasons and stepped down from his role on Fate/Extra Record, citing current health concerns as the reason for taking a break from game development. Nino had previously produced the original Fate/Extra and contributed to the first Etrian Odyssey. Arco Wada returns as character designer for the remake.

About the Extraverse

The original Fate/Extra launched in Japan in 2010, with Aksys Games releasing it in North America in November 2011. The companion title Fate/Extra CCC followed on PSP in Japan in March 2013. Both games are set in an alternate science-fiction continuity of Type-Moon’s Fate universe, commonly known among fans as the “Extraverse.”

The setting inspired SHAFT’s 10-episode TV anime Fate/Extra Last Encore, which aired in January 2018 and was picked up by Netflix for international streaming in June 2018. A three-episode special, Fate/Extra Last Encore: Illustrias Tendōsetsu, followed in July 2018.

Other Extraverse titles include Fate/EXTELLA: The Umbral Star (2016), Fate/EXTELLA LINK (2018), and the action RPG Fate/Samurai Remnant, launched by Koei Tecmo in September 2023 for PS5, PS4, PC, and Switch worldwide.
