Fans of the TV anime Kusuriya no Hitorigoto (The Apothecary Diaries) have a special treat to look forward to this New Year’s season: an official osechi set inspired by the series is now open for pre-orders through Itochu Shokuhin’s online store and select partner retailers.
An Elaborate One-Tier Box Fit for the Inner Palace
The osechi comes as a single-tier hors d’oeuvre box containing 18 Japanese and Western dishes. Opening the lid reveals a chocolate plate shaped like a Katabami flower — the symbol associated with Maomao — placed at the center, with a pale-purple white chocolate mousse evoking Jinshi positioned just below it. Showpiece dishes such as “Braised Pork Belly in Black Vinegar Sauce with Diamond Garnish” capture the grandeur and splendor of the inner palace setting.
The menu also draws inspiration from the Shrine of Choices (選択の廟) story arc, featuring items like “Red Paprika Grieg” and “Green Kumquat with Leaves” — a nod to the mysteries woven throughout the series.
Exclusive Acrylic Stands and Original Artwork
Each osechi set includes a newly drawn acrylic stand and an original illustration paper, both featuring Maomao and Jinshi sharing a warm New Year’s meal together.
The set is priced at ¥19,440 and is scheduled for delivery on December 30.
Comments from the Development Team
On October 16, comments were released from two key figures behind the product: Fumio Sakai, representative of Omi Foods (the osechi developer), and Rie Onishi of Itochu Shokuhin’s retail sales division.
Sakai stated: “We worked to express the world of this series through flavor, paying particular attention to the use of color so that it would not negatively affect the taste of the food.”
Onishi, commenting on the acrylic stands, said: “Please enjoy the osechi as if Maomao and Jinshi are seated right there at the table with you.”
