A limited-time Initial D (頭文字D) pop-up shop is currently open on the first floor of FKD Interpark in Utsunomiya City, Tochigi Prefecture. The centrepiece of the event is the display and sale of AUTOart’s 1/18-scale Toyota Sprinter Trueno (AE86), with a real AE86 on hand so visitors can compare the model directly against the genuine article.
Thirty Years of Initial D
Initial D is a street-racing manga by Shuichi Shigeno that ran in Weekly Young Magazine from issue 30 of 1995 through issue 35 of 2013, accumulating a total print run of over 56 million copies. Its intense mountain-pass battles and meticulous depictions of real production cars left a lasting mark on car culture across Asia and Europe, and the series was adapted into an anime and translated into multiple languages. 2025 marks the 30th anniversary of its serialisation debut.
A 1/18 Scale Model Built for the Anniversary
The AUTOart model was created specifically to commemorate that milestone. It is based on the “Project D” specification that appears in the latter half of the manga — the fully tuned final form of Takumi’s AE86. Key details faithfully reproduced include:
- Sharp body lines derived from 3D scanning of the actual vehicle
- Carbon-fibre bonnet
- Lowered ride height
- 8-spoke wide wheels
The model also features opening mechanisms for the retractable headlights, doors, and bonnet, allowing a close look at the precisely crafted engine bay and interior from every angle. A special package edition comes with a metal nameplate.
Real Car, Real Comparison — Plus Plenty of Merchandise
The event gives visitors a chance to appreciate the model’s textures and presence in person — details that photographs simply cannot convey. With a real AE86 parked alongside, fans can judge just how accurately the miniature captures the original and soak up the world of Initial D at the same time.
Beyond the scale model, the shop stocks a wide range of officially licensed Initial D goods, including apparel, car accessories, and collectible items.
