Every year on July 17, Japan observes Tokyo Day (東京の日) — a date that commemorates the renaming of Edo to Tokyo. The change took place on the 17th day of the seventh month in the fourth year of the Keiō era, which corresponds to September 3, 1868, on the modern calendar.
As Japan’s capital, Tokyo is one of the most recognisable settings in anime. Real-life districts such as Shinjuku, Shibuya, and Akihabara have appeared across countless series, while the city’s shitamachi (old downtown) atmosphere and towering skyline have each lent a distinct flavour to the stories set there.
In honour of the occasion, Anime! Anime! is bringing back its reader survey — “Which anime set in Tokyo stands out to you?” — for the first time in two years. The poll is open-answer format, so readers are free to name any title they feel best represents the city.
The deadline for submissions is July 2. Results will be published as soon as they are compiled, so stay tuned.
