Kadokawa has released the first teaser promotional video for the television anime adaptation of Yasukiyo Kotobuki’s light novel series Arafō Kenja no Isekai Seikatsu Nikki (The Diary of a Middle-Aged Sage’s Carefree Life in Another World). Alongside the teaser, the studio confirmed the anime’s first cast member and announced a January 2027 premiere window.
Cast & Staff
Tomokazu Sugita voices the protagonist Zelos Merlin, the all-powerful Great Sage at the center of the story.
The production team includes:

- Hiroko Kanasugi (Drugstore in Another World: The Slow Life of a Cheat Pharmacist) handling series scripts

Story
Forty-year-old Satoshi Ōsako is a farmer in rural Japan and a hardcore player of the online VRRPG Swords & Sorceries. The day he finally defeats the game’s final boss, the dying enemy curses him — killing him in real life. With a nudge from a carefree goddess, Satoshi is reincarnated in a new world as his in-game avatar, the immensely powerful Great Sage Zelos Merlin.
Armed with godlike abilities, Satoshi’s grand ambition is to… settle down on another quiet farm. Standing between him and that dream, however, are a vast and dangerous forest, roving bandits, and an unexpected gig tutoring a young noble girl in magic. The central question: can the mightiest sage in the land conquer his hardest quest yet — finding some peace and quiet?
Background
Kotobuki originally published the story as a web novel on the Shōsetsuka ni Narō website beginning in 2016. Kadokawa released the 21st light novel volume, illustrated by Johndee, on April 24. J-Novel Club publishes the series in English.
A manga adaptation by Maneki has been running on Square Enix’s Manga UP! platform since 2018; its 18th compiled volume shipped in Japan on June 5. BookWalker publishes the manga in English under the title The Diary of a Middle-Aged Teacher’s Carefree Life in Another World. A separate manga adaptation by 888 also launched on Kadokawa’s ComicWalker platform in 2018.
Most recently, Piyoko Hatori launched a prequel spinoff manga, The Diary of a Middle-Aged Sage’s Carefree Life in Another World Zero — Sword and Sorceress World, last December. Set before the events of the main story, it follows the in-game adventures of Zelos Merlin.
