Synopsis
In Tsukuyomi, a virtual space where anyone can create an avatar and express themselves freely, 17-year-old high-schooler Sakayori Ayaha is juggling a part-time job and her studies. One day she discovers a baby emerging from a gaming utility pole. The infant rapidly grows into a girl about Ayaha’s age, who is named Kaguya. Ayaha takes on the role of producer, writing songs for Kaguya to perform as a liver on Tsukuyomi — but a shadowy force intent on returning Kaguya to the moon is closing in.
Highlights
The film boldly reimagines The Tale of the Bamboo Cutter (竹取物語), Japan’s oldest known narrative, as a virtual live-stage story. The bond between Kaguya and Ayaha unfolds through songwriting and live streaming.
The soundtrack features contributions from celebrated Vocaloid producers including ryo (supercell), kz (livetune), 40mP, HoneyWorks, Aqu3ra, and yuigot. Highlights include the main theme “Ex-Otogibanashi” performed by Tsukimi Yachiyo, and the ending theme “ray 超かぐや姫！Version” performed by Kaguya and Yachiyo.
Animation was co-produced by Studio Colorido (known for Penguin Highway and A Whisker Away) and director Yamashita Seigo’s Studio Chromato. Following its Netflix debut, the film received a theatrical run from February 20, 2026, which was later extended and expanded due to strong audience response.
