DC Studios and Warner Bros. Animation took the stage at the Annecy International Animated Film Festival on Thursday to announce Joker: Laugh Riot, a new anime series based on the iconic Batman villain, slated for a worldwide release.
Staff and Studio
Yasuhiro Aoki — known for ChaO and directing episode 4 of Batman: Gotham Knight — is helming the project at Sola Entertainment, the studio behind The Lord of the Rings: The War of the Rohirrim. The same panel also saw the announcement of two additional animated series: Absolute Batman and Krypto.
Story
Joker: Laugh Riot follows the Joker as he embarks on a violent crusade to track down Batman’s killer.
New Joker Manga From Kodansha
Thursday also brought news of a new DC Comics-based manga titled Machibura JOKER (“Joker Walking Around Town”), set to launch in the July 2 issue of Kodansha’s Morning magazine. Masa Ichikawa is drawing the series, with DC credited for character rights and supervision, and international publishing rights agency Fortuna credited for cooperation.
The Joker in Other Anime
The Joker previously appeared in Wit Studio’s original Suicide Squad ISEKAI anime, which debuted in the U.S. on Max and Hulu with its first three episodes in June 2024, followed by a Japanese broadcast on Tokyo MX and BS11 in July 2024.
Meanwhile, Batman Ninja vs. Yakuza League, Warner Bros. Discovery’s new Batman Ninja CG anime film, began streaming on HBO Max in July 2025, after a digital release in the U.S. via Amazon Prime Video, Apple TV, Google Play, Vudu, and other platforms, as well as a Japanese release in March 2025.
