The anime adaptation of Fool Night, based on the manga by Yasuda Kasumi, has released its official key visual and main promotional video. Alongside the visual materials, five additional cast members have been announced, along with the artists behind the opening and ending theme songs.
Story Overview
Set in the far future, Fool Night takes place on an Earth where humanity barely survives on trace amounts of oxygen produced by “Tenka” — a technology that transforms humans into plants called “Reika.” The story follows Toshiro, a young man who has lost all hope. After undergoing the Tenka procedure, he unexpectedly awakens a special ability and finds himself drawn into a series of escalating conflicts.
Key Visual and Main PV
The key visual depicts Toshiro alongside main characters Yomiko, Akira, Kano, and Jin, standing beneath a darkened sky while black shadows creep at their feet. The imposing Tenka-in — the institution that governs Tenka technology — looms in the background.
The main PV showcases riots staged by anti-Tenka factions, a rousing speech by their leader Higasa, and the full reveal of Ivy, a character whose body is entirely entwined in vines.
New Cast Members
- Wakayama Shion — Matsuno Sumi, a young pianist searching for her father who has become a Reika
- Tsuchida Daiki — Higasa Ken, a senior figure in the anti-Tenka movement and secretary-general of the Eijito party
- Okamoto Nobuhiko — Nishi, who conspires with Higasa to abolish the Tenka system
- Semboku Ayaka — Okumura Megu, a middle-school student who joins anti-Tenka protests alongside her father
- Kobayashi Yumiko — Ivy, a character connected to a string of serial murders
Previously announced main cast includes Uchiyama Koki (Toshiro), Kotobuki Minako (Yomiko), Enoki Junya (Akira), Endo Aya (Kano), and Mizuuchi Kiyomitsu (Jin).
Theme Songs
The opening theme is performed by Tempalay, who drew inspiration from a Shakespeare passage quoted at the start of the work. The band aimed to express the desire to live, contradiction, and escapism as light found within despair. The ending theme is by Nowlu, who described the song as a non-fiction cry shared between herself and Toshiro, born from personal pain and anger that mirrored the world of the series.
Cast & Staff Comments (Selected)
Wakayama Shion (Sumi): “Sumi carries a very human kind of pain. Despite being in a comparatively privileged environment, invisible suffering continues to erode her. I hope viewers will watch how she chooses to live with Toshiro’s help.”
Tsuchida Daiki (Higasa): “He’s a cold man who will use any means to achieve his goals — suspicious in every way. But the conviction he holds will make viewers think deeply about the root problems of this world.”
Okamoto Nobuhiko (Nishi): “Nishi’s inner state is more complex than most characters. Because it doesn’t surface easily in his voice, he comes across as somewhat mysterious — I hope viewers look forward to his appearances.”
Semboku Ayaka (Megu): “I was so eager to be part of this after reading the original manga. Now that the release date is approaching, I’m a little nervous — but I want to face it together with audiences around the world.”
Kobayashi Yumiko (Ivy): “The world of this work is so overwhelming that I forgot I was working and read straight through to the latest volume. I hope viewers can feel, through Ivy’s voice, the emotions he cannot put into words.”
Nowlu: “This is non-fiction. It is Toshiro’s scream and mine. The suffering and anger I was facing when I wrote these lyrics were so similar to the story that it felt like fate. I’m glad to be alive — please, you keep living too.”
