A livestream event has unveiled the first official trailer for Mobile Suit Gundam Seed FREEDOM ZERO, the prequel to the hit anime film Mobile Suit Gundam Seed FREEDOM. The trailer confirms the film will open in Japanese theaters on January 15, 2027, followed by a North American release in February 2027.

A Script 20 Years in the Making
Director Mitsuo Fukuda, producer Hisakazu Naka, and voice actor Sōichirō Hoshi (Kira Yamato) appeared at a stage greeting during the screening event that announced the prequel. Fukuda revealed that the script for Gundam Seed FREEDOM ZERO was actually completed 20 years ago, with screenwriters Chiaki Morosawa and Shigeru Morita having written the scenario while the team was still in the planning stages of Gundam Seed Freedom.
Storyboards for the film are already nearly half finished — and some of them predate the storyboards for Gundam Seed Freedom itself. Voice recording has also been completed. Fukuda noted that the project was originally conceived as an OVA, though the team has not yet finalized how it will ultimately be presented.
Looking Back at Gundam Seed FREEDOM’s Success
Mobile Suit Gundam Seed FREEDOM opened in Japan in January 2024, debuting at number one at the box office. It sold 634,182 tickets for 1,065,983,130 yen (approximately US$7.20 million) in its first three days — the highest three-day opening in Gundam franchise history — and remains the highest-grossing Gundam film ever in Japan.
Bandai Namco Filmworks and Fathom Events brought the film to the United States and Canada in May 2024, and it is currently streaming on Netflix. Special editions screened in Japanese theaters in fall 2024, including one version with additional footage appended to the ending and another featuring the teaser for FREEDOM ZERO.
Meanwhile, Gundam Channel International has begun streaming the English dub of the original Mobile Suit Gundam Seed anime on YouTube, with Mobile Suit Gundam Seed Destiny set to follow in the future.
