The legendary 1993 anime film Jubei Ninpucho (獣兵衛忍風帖), internationally known as Ninja Scroll, is set to receive its first-ever nationwide theatrical screening in Japan in a newly remastered 4K version. The limited run begins September 4, 2026 and lasts for two weeks.
A Kawajiri Classic Returns
Written, scripted, and directed by Yoshiaki Kawajiri — the visionary filmmaker behind Wicked City and Vampire Hunter D: Bloodlust — Jubei Ninpucho was produced by Animate Film with production support from Madhouse. Set during Japan’s turbulent Sengoku era, the film follows Kibagami Jubei, a masterless wandering ninja, who crosses paths with Kagero, a female warrior of the Koga clan. Together they are drawn into a fierce battle against the superhuman ninja squad known as the Kimon Hachinin-shu (Eight Devils of Kimon), led by the fearsome Himuro Gemma.

Filmarks’ Second Kawajiri Project
This 4K theatrical event marks the second project by Filmarks spotlighting Kawajiri’s work, following a revival screening of Vampire Hunter D: Bloodlust. The run will initially cover 78 cinemas nationwide, with additional venues to be announced. Each participating theater will distribute exclusive admission gifts to attendees.
