With Magic Knight Rayearth — one of CLAMP’s most iconic works — set to receive a new anime adaptation more than 30 years after its original run, premiering on October 7 with a main cast including Sakura Ayane, Okubo Rumi, and Takahashi Rie, now is the perfect time to revisit the broader CLAMP catalogue. One title that stands out as a personal favourite among anime writers is Kobato.

Many Kinds of Love, Layered Like a Baumkuchen

CLAMP has always been celebrated for depicting love in all its forms — across age gaps, genders, and species — and Kobato. is one of the richest examples of that tradition. The manga ran in Monthly Sunday GX and Newtype from 2005 to 2011, collected into six volumes, and was adapted into a 24-episode TV anime that began airing in autumn 2009. Warm artwork, light-hearted comedy, and a genuinely moving portrayal of love make it a story that works on multiple levels.

Synopsis: Healing Hearts, One Fragment at a Time

The story follows Hanato Kobato, a cheerful but clumsy young woman who arrives in a town accompanied by Ioryogi, a small creature that resembles a stuffed animal. Kobato has a wish she must fulfil: collect enough fragments of wounded hearts to fill a bottle, and she will be granted the ability to go wherever she desires. To gather those fragments, she sets about healing the people around her.

Along the way she meets Fujimoto Kiyokazu, a brusque young man, and Okiura Sayaka, the director of Yomogi Nursery — a small childcare centre that Fujimoto helps out at. The nursery is drowning in debt and on the verge of closure, and Kobato joins in to help while continuing her quest.

Complicated Relationships and Unrequited Feelings

As the story unfolds, a web of intertwined feelings emerges. Fujimoto harbours feelings for Sayaka, whom he has known since childhood. Sayaka, in turn, still carries a torch for her ex-husband, Okiura Kazuto — who happens to be the debt collector threatening to shut down the nursery, making him a source of deep resentment for Fujimoto.

Kobato is far from a bystander in all of this. She works hard to heal Sayaka’s heart, though her clumsiness frequently exasperates Fujimoto. Yet as she gradually discovers the quiet kindness beneath his sharp exterior, she finds herself falling for him — even knowing his heart belongs elsewhere.

Ioryogi, too, has someone precious to him, and reuniting with that person depends entirely on Kobato achieving her wish.

CLAMP’s Approach to Love

What sets Kobato. apart is that no matter how tangled the relationships become, no character resorts to taking what they want by force. The love depicted here is selfless: accepting that the person you love may love someone else, and choosing to support their happiness anyway. Fujimoto acts for Sayaka’s sake, Kobato acts for Fujimoto’s, and every other character makes choices rooted in care for the people they hold dear.

The series does not romanticise self-sacrifice uncritically, however. CLAMP takes care to acknowledge that sacrificing yourself causes pain to those who love you — a nuance that gives the story real emotional weight.

The anime adaptation differs from the manga in certain details, but with CLAMP’s Ohkawa Nanase involved in series composition, it holds together well and is best enjoyed as “another version of Kobato.”

Bonus: Connections to Other CLAMP Works

Part of what makes Kobato. especially rewarding for long-time CLAMP fans is its links to the wider CLAMP universe. Following the familiar rule that “the same soul can exist across different worlds,” familiar faces from Chobits, xxxHOLiC, and Wish all make appearances. Wish in particular shares a closely connected setting with Kobato., and reading the two together deepens the experience considerably.

Kobato. layers diverse forms of love and CLAMP’s rich creative history into a story that is as satisfying as it is compact. At just six volumes, it is an easy binge — and a highly recommended one.
