At the first-ever solo event for Kusuriya no Hitorigoto (The Apothecary Diaries) — titled “薬屋のひとりごと～夏の園遊会 2026～” and held on August 15 before an audience of 4,000 fans — the production team unveiled a wave of new information covering both TV Anime Season 3 and the upcoming theatrical film.

Season 3 Premieres October 2, 2026

TV Anime Kusuriya no Hitorigoto Season 3 is officially set to begin airing on Friday, October 2, 2026, in the “FRIDAY ANIME NIGHT (フラアニ)” slot on Nippon TV at 23:00 JST every Friday. Streaming on various platforms will follow after each broadcast.

Based on the light novel series by Hinata Natsu with illustrations by Shino Toko (Hero Bunko / Imagica Infos), the franchise has surpassed 57 million copies in worldwide circulation. Season 2, which began airing in January 2025, consistently topped streaming charts and swept multiple categories at the Crunchyroll Anime Awards 2026, winning Best Director, Best Drama, Best Voice Actor, and Best Lead Character.

Season 3 Story: Beyond the Inner Palace

The stage expands in Season 3, taking Maomao and Jinshi from the imperial court into the city streets and even a neighboring country, where new trials await them both. When a locust served at breakfast triggers a nagging sense of unease in Maomao, she begins investigating its source. Meanwhile, Jinshi — now shouldering his true responsibilities as the emperor’s younger brother — is troubled by ominous signs of a coming disaster. Adding to the tension, rumors of a mysterious celestial maiden who bewitches all who encounter her begin to spread, casting a fresh shadow over the kingdom of Rikoku.

The teaser trailer shows the enigmatic maiden’s unsettling smile, glimpses of the looming catastrophe, and characters such as Luoban and Luo Shun drawing Maomao into new incidents. The trailer closes on a chilling line from Bai Niangniang (白娘々): “A medicine that soothes the heart and erases the pain of this mortal world.” The Season 3 Key Visual depicts Maomao and Jinshi walking through a golden wheat field beneath a dawn sky, evoking the spirit of a new journey beyond the palace walls.

Opening Theme: Yorushika — “雲を抜け風下へ私だけ”

The Season 3 opening theme is confirmed to be “雲を抜け風下へ私だけ” (Kumo wo Nuke Kazashimo e Watashi Dake) by Yorushika, the duo celebrated for literary lyrics, guitar-driven soundscapes, and crystalline vocals.

Composer n-buna shared that the phrase “雲を抜け風下へ私だけ” had been floating in his mind while he was working on the concept for his next album — conjuring images of a vast, wind-swept plain. The first instrument that came to mind was the erhu, whose tone evokes the wind across open grasslands. When the Kusuriya no Hitorigoto team approached him and explained that Season 3’s theme was “a journey” — almost like a road movie — the connection clicked immediately. “I had a strange sense of certainty that the music I was trying to make would create an interesting reaction with this work,” he said.

Ueda Reina Cast as Bai Niangniang

The new character Bai Niangniang (白娘々) — a mysterious celestial maiden with snow-white skin, white hair, and crimson eyes who is stirring up rumors across the land — will be voiced by Ueda Reina, known for her roles as Reze in the Chainsaw Man: Reze Arc film, Shika Chika in Ao no Hako, and Sakuya in Code Geass: Rozé of the Recapture.

Ueda commented: “She is a mysterious girl whose true identity and purpose remain shrouded in secrecy. I will approach this elusive character with care, so I hope you’ll enjoy Season 3 and keep an eye on her every move!”

New Character Visuals and Supporting Cast

New visuals for 10 characters were also revealed, including the three high-ranking courtesans of Rokushoukan — Bailing, Meimei, and Nühua — along with Zhao Yu (a survivor of the Zi clan now in Maomao’s care), Ma Xian (son of Gaoshun and Jinshi’s aide and bodyguard), Luoban (adopted son of the eccentric strategist Luohan, with an obsessive fixation on numbers), and Luohan’s deputy Luo Shun.

Advance Screening Event

Ahead of the broadcast premiere, a special advance screening of Episodes 1 and 2 will be held on Sunday, September 27, 2026, at TOHO Cinemas Roppongi. A stage greeting following the screening will feature Yuki Aoi (Maomao), Otsuka Takehito (Jinshi), Tachibana Ryumaru (Ma Xian), and Fujiwara Natsumi (Zhao Yu). Live viewings at 10 venues nationwide have also been confirmed. Attendees will receive a Season 3 Key Visual sticker as an entry gift.

Spotify Podcast and Film Updates

The 【薬屋とふたりごと】 podcast on Spotify returns for Season 3, hosted by Yuki Aoi with a guest cast member each episode. The first episode, featuring Otsuka Takehito, launches on October 4, 2026, with new episodes dropping bi-weekly.

On the film front, original character designs for 劇場版 薬屋のひとりごと 亡妃の秘宝 — including Mu Qing, Ruo Qing, and Yin Shan — illustrated by original artist Shino Toko were unveiled. Teaser Key Visual advance tickets (card type) for the film went on sale from August 17, 2026, at 14:00 JST via Meijya Mail Order and MOVIE WALKER STORE.
