The live-action film adaptation of Mashle -MASHLE-, based on the manga by Hajime Komoto, has officially announced its lead cast and director. Mackenyu (Maeda Gorky) will star as protagonist Mash Burnedead, while Yuichi Fukuda takes the director’s chair. A teaser visual and a special first-look footage clip have been released alongside the announcement.

First-Look Footage

The teaser footage offers the first glimpse of Mackenyu as Mash Burnedead. Highlights include a scene in which a fake magic mark is applied to Mash’s face to conceal his inability to use magic, as well as a sequence showing him powering through bench presses at extraordinary speed — a signature trait of the character.

About Mashle -MASHLE-

Mashle -MASHLE- is a fantasy set in a world where everyone wields magic and a person’s worth is determined by their magical ability. Mash Burnedead is a young man with no magical power whatsoever, but possesses a superhuman physique honed through relentless physical training. To protect his adoptive father, he sets out to become a “Divine Visionary” — the most powerful magic-user in the land.

The manga ran in Weekly Shonen Jump (Shueisha) from 2020 to 2023. An anime adaptation aired its first season in 2023 and its second season in 2024, with a third season scheduled for January 2027. The film is produced by Warner Bros. under the 2027 Mashle Film Production Committee.

Comments

Hajime Komoto (Original Manga Author)

When I heard there would be a live-action film, I literally went “No way!?” My cat Yoichomaru got so excited he started scratching a cardboard box! Seeing the set and Mackenyu’s physique in person — my own pecs started twitching, I remember it vividly. And Warner Bros. is producing it… I’m so thrilled I’m almost getting a cramp. You’ll definitely want to hit the gym after watching this. See you at the cinema!

Mackenyu — as Mash Burnedead

I loved Mashle -MASHLE- so much that I went into filming determined to bring that same excitement to a live-action audience. Playing Mash Burnedead — a character who rarely shows his emotions — was a real challenge, but I believe his superhuman strength communicates his feelings even without many words. As for preparation, from the day I received the offer I spent three years building a physique convincing enough for fans to accept. I hope everyone comes to see the results on the big screen. Also… shall we flex a muscle?

Yuichi Fukuda — Director

I fell completely in love with Mashle — an introverted, all-powerful protagonist paired with classic gag comedy. It has every element I love. Five seconds after getting the green light, I was already calling Mackenyu asking, “When do you finish shooting Zoro?” Luckily the schedules aligned. The day before filming began, he showed up with a perfectly sculpted upper body and lean legs — the ideal Mash physique. His dedication was palpable. Almost every cast member was someone I’d never worked with before, which made every day feel fresh and incredibly fun. I can’t wait for the release.

Special Website

The film’s official website has been taken over by the magical script used in the story’s world, styled to resemble a magical-realm newspaper. The text appears indecipherable at first glance, but tracing over it with a finger or cursor reveals Japanese text hidden beneath — a clever interactive touch for fans.
