The official website for Madhouse‘s new theatrical anime project launched on Wednesday, revealing the film’s full title as ghost – end of night (ghost/夜の果て) — previously announced under the working title ghost. The site also debuted an early teaser trailer, the first key visual, and confirmed a February 11, 2027 opening in Japan.

Music and Theme Song

The teaser previews the insert song “Sugar” performed by alternative rock band hitsujibungaku, who are also handling the film’s theme song. The film’s full score is being composed by Ohzora Kimishima, marking his first film score since his debut.

Manga Adaptation

The website additionally announced a manga adaptation drawn by artist himiko. The manga will begin serialization in Kadokawa’s Young Ace magazine on August 4. A preview chapter will appear in the magazine’s August issue, shipping on July 4.

Story

Bandai Namco Filmworks describes the film as follows:

I want to know what is <real>. Set in the near future where labor is no longer necessary, this is the story of Neekei, a girl who continues seeking the “real” while resisting the order of a content society.

Director and International Exposure

The film marks Shingo Natsume‘s first time directing an original anime film. Natsume has stated that he is aiming for “a work that could be called fictional but is in tune with our current time and seeks realism.”

The project was previously presented at the MIFA 2025 pitch session, held in conjunction with the Annecy International Animation Film Festival.
