A Long Road to Release

SHAFT first teased a new entry in the franchise with a concept movie back in 2015, but the project wasn’t formally announced until April 2021. The film has since faced multiple delays — most recently in January, when production circumstances pushed the opening back from a planned February date. Before that, the film had already slipped from winter 2024 to winter 2025, and then to February 2026 before the latest postponement.

Franchise Background

The original 12-episode Puella Magi Madoka Magica TV anime premiered in January 2011. The compilation films Part 1: Beginnings and Part 2: Eternal followed in October 2012, with the sequel film Part 3: Rebellion arriving in October 2013. Aniplex of America has released all of these titles in North America; Crunchyroll and Funimation have also streamed the series. A TV edition of the two compilation films began airing in October 2025.

The Magia Record: Puella Magi Madoka Magica Side Story TV anime, based on the smartphone game, ran for three seasons between January 2020 and April 2022. The Japanese version of the game ended service in July 2024.

The newest entry in the franchise, Puella Magi Madoka Magica: Magia Exedra, launched on mobile in March 2025 and expanded to PC via Steam in July 2025.
