The stage presentation for the Mahōtsukai no Yoru (Witch on the Holy Night) anime film at the FGO Fes. 2026 event on Saturday unveiled the film’s “double visual” — two key visuals drawn by separate creative teams. Aniplex also streamed a video reveal of both images.
Two Visuals, Two Teams
The first visual was drawn by Hirokazu Koyama of Type-Moon, the artist responsible for the original visual novel’s graphics. The second was created by the film’s animation producer, ufotable, each reflecting the distinct aesthetic sensibilities of their respective teams.
Returning Voice Cast
The film will feature the original game’s voice cast reprising their roles:
- Haruka Tomatsu as Aoko Aozaki
- Kana Hanazawa as Alice Kuonji
- Yūsuke Kobayashi as Soujyuro Sizuki
Smartphone Version Launches Alongside the Film on November 20
Alongside the film news, it was announced that the original Mahōtsukai no Yoru visual novel will receive a smartphone version, launching on November 20 — the same day the film opens in Japan.
Game History
Aniplex previously released the PlayStation 4 and Nintendo Switch versions of the game in the West in December 2022, simultaneously with the Japanese release. Combined sales of those versions have surpassed 150,000 copies worldwide. Type-Moon also brought the game to Steam in December 2023.
Origins and the Nasuverse
Mahōtsukai no Yoru is one of the earliest collaborations between writer Kinoko Nasu and artist Takashi Takeuchi, dating back to the mid-1990s — predating the founding of Type-Moon. Originally a novel shared only among friends, it was eventually developed into a full visual novel with graphics by Hirokazu Koyama and officially released in April 2012, with two sequels planned.
Set in the late 1980s, the story follows Aoko Aozaki, one of two sister heirs to a lineage of modern mages. Despite her disinterest in magic, she is declared the family’s heir and reluctantly begins training under Alice Kuonji, a young witch living in a secluded hilltop manor. Aoko juggles her magical studies with her role as student council president, befriends Soujyuro Sizuki, a transfer student unfamiliar with modern life, and clashes with her older sister Tōko Aozaki, who believes her birthright was unjustly taken from her.
The story is notable as one of the few tangible links within the “Nasuverse” — the fan term for the shared universe spanning Type-Moon’s works including Tsukihime, Fate/stay night, and The Garden of Sinners. An older Aoko serves as an early mentor to Tsukihime protagonist Shiki Tohno, while an older Tōko employs Garden of Sinners protagonist Shiki Ryōgi.
