Story

Set in the late 1980s, the story follows Aoko Aozaki, one of two sister heirs to a long lineage of modern mages. Despite having little interest in magic, she is suddenly named heir to her family’s arcane arts and reluctantly begins training under Alice Kuonji, a young witch living in a secluded hilltop manor. Aoko juggles her magical studies with her role as student council president, befriends Sōjūrō Shizuki, a transfer student with little familiarity with modern life, and clashes with her older sister Tōko Aozaki, who believes her birthright was unjustly taken from her.

Connections to the Nasuverse

Mahōtsukai no Yoru is one of the few works that provides concrete links within the loosely connected “Nasuverse” — the fan term for the shared universe spanning Type-Moon titles including Tsukihime, Fate/stay night, and The Garden of Sinners. An older Aoko Aozaki serves as an early mentor to Tsukihime protagonist Shiki Tohno, while an older Tōko Aozaki employs Garden of Sinners protagonist Shiki Ryōgi.

Background

Mahōtsukai no Yoru originated as one of the earliest collaborations between Kinoko Nasu and artist Takashi Takeuchi in the mid-1990s, predating the founding of Type-Moon. Originally a prose novel circulated only among friends, it was eventually developed into a full visual novel featuring graphics by Hirokazu Koyama, which shipped in April 2012, with two sequels planned. Aniplex released the PlayStation 4 and Nintendo Switch versions in the West in December 2022, and the game has since sold over 150,000 copies worldwide. A Steam version followed in December 2023.
