Fuji TV ONE Sports & Variety has announced a special re-broadcast of Mando Kobayashi: Chiba Tetsuya Zenshigoto Eikyuu Hozonban Special on Sunday, December 6, 2026, from 22:00 to 23:00. The broadcast is a tribute to manga legend Chiba Tetsuya, who passed away on October 22. The episode was originally recorded in 2014.
About Mando Kobayashi
Mando Kobayashi is a manga-focused variety programme hosted by Kendo Kobayashi, in which he visits manga artists he admires and draws out behind-the-scenes stories about their work. Over 14 years on air, the show has welcomed more than 100 manga creators.
What the Special Episode Covers
In the episode, Chiba Tetsuya shares childhood memories from his attic hideaway and recalls the early days when he would bring hand-drawn manga — sketched in pencil on the backs of flyers — to rental bookshops. The programme explores several of his landmark works, including:
- Chikai no Makyuu
- Shidenkainotaka
- Harris no Senpuu
- Ashita no Joe — Kendo Kobayashi’s personal favourite
Ashita no Joe: Untold Stories
The Ashita no Joe segment delves into Chiba’s first meeting with scriptwriter Kajiwara Ikki, the physical and emotional toll of drawing the brutal bouts between Joe and his great rival Rikiishi, and a date scene between Joe and Ki-chan — the girl from the dried-goods shop — that was not in the original script, yet became the bridge to the story’s iconic ending.
War, Manga, and Personal Reflection
The programme also touches on Chiba’s feelings about war and manga as expressed in his autobiographical essay comic Hinemosu Notari Nikki, offering a deeply personal look at the experiences that shaped him.
A Message from the Production Team
So many editors and manga artists have said to us, “Chiba-sensei was on your show, wasn’t he!” Because he so graciously agreed to appear when the programme was virtually unknown, doors opened for us afterwards — and over the next 14 years we were able to welcome more than 100 manga artists. Chiba-sensei is the great benefactor of Mando Kobayashi. We offer our sincerest condolences.
