About Mahou Shoujo Madoka☆Magica
Mahou Shoujo Madoka☆Magica is an original anime that aired as a TV series in 2011, generating enormous buzz. The story follows Kaname Madoka, an ordinary second-year middle school student, whose life changes after a fateful encounter leads her into the world of magical girls born from wishes. The series was directed by Shinbo Akiyuki, written by Urobuchi Gen (Nitroplus), and features original character designs by Aoki Ume.
The show’s blend of charming everyday life and unpredictable, thrilling narrative — brought to life through Shaft‘s distinctive animation, Gekidan Inu Curry‘s avant-garde spatial design, and Kajiura Yuki‘s dramatic score — earned it widespread critical acclaim across multiple fields.
In 2012, the TV series was re-edited into two theatrical films: [Part 1] Beginnings and [Part 2] Eternal. These were followed in 2013 by the all-new [New] Rebellion, which became the first late-night anime film to gross over ¥2 billion at the Japanese box office. The franchise has remained popular ever since, spawning manga adaptations, games, figures, and more. The latest film, Gekijouban Mahou Shoujo Madoka☆Magica: Walpurgis no Kaiten — a direct sequel to Rebellion — began screening in August 2026 and has already surpassed ¥2.1 billion, setting a new series record.
