Hiromi Okubo, the manga artist behind the hit series Hito wa Mitame ga 100 Percent, has launched her latest work: Moshimo Aitsu no Zense ga Mushi Dattara ~Zense Doubutsu Shindan Madoguchi~ (“What If That Guy’s Past Life Was a Bug? ~Past-Life Animal Diagnosis Window~”). Volume 1 went on sale on July 13, 2026, published by Kodansha.
Story
Set in Japan in the year 20XX, the series takes place in a world where science has proven that every human being had a past life — and that past life was always some kind of animal. To boost national happiness, the government has experimentally established a “Past-Life Animal Diagnosis Window” where citizens can learn about their own — or someone else’s — previous incarnation.
Assigned to staff this unusual office is Jindo Riho, a serious, emotionally reserved woman in her late twenties who has already suffered thirty consecutive failures in her search for a marriage partner. Her routine is upended when a woman bursts in asking her to investigate the past life of a cheating husband, setting the story in motion.
A Cast of Everyday Struggles
Each chapter introduces a new visitor to the diagnosis window, bringing with them a distinct real-life problem:
- A housewife tormented by an unfaithful husband
- A woman unable to stop seeking cosmetic surgery
- An office worker suffering workplace harassment from a superior
Through the quirky lens of past-life animal therapy, the manga explores whether understanding where someone “came from” can help people better understand — and connect with — one another.
