A special exhibition titled Nige Jouzu no Wakagimi Tokubetsuten: An Invitation to the Past That Continues into the Present will open for a strictly limited three-day run from August 28 to 30, 2026, at Tsurugaoka Hachimangu Shrine in Kanagawa Prefecture. The exhibition is based on the manga series by Matsui Yusei.
History and Art Through the Eyes of Hojo Tokiyuki
Kamakura serves as both the beginning and the end of the story in Nige Jouzu no Wakagimi, making it the ideal setting for this event. The exhibition is designed to guide visitors through Japanese history and artistic culture via the journey of protagonist Hojo Tokiyuki.
Exhibition Highlights
- Introduction / Entering the World of the Series: Characters and the story’s atmosphere are presented through traditional art forms including folding screens (byobu) and hanging scrolls (kakejiku).
- Calligraphy — “Nanbokucho Onigokko”: Original calligraphy works by renowned calligrapher Maeda Kamari are on display.
- The Nanbokucho Era — An Age of War: This section traces Tokiyuki’s path after the Nakasendai Rebellion, spotlighting two key “weapons”: the Hojo clan heirloom sword Onimaru, entrusted to him by Yorishige, and a special imperial decree from Emperor Go-Daigo.
- The World of Animation: Original animation cels and art-setting documents from the TV anime are exhibited, with a focus on the beautifully rendered landscapes of Kamakura.
- Collaboration with Japanese Painting: Features actual volume-cover background artwork created by Asakura Takafumi, a Japanese-style painter.
- Matsui Yusei’s Nanbokucho Weapons — AR Experience: Visitors can enjoy an augmented reality experience using 3D weapon models that Matsui himself built as references for drawing the manga.
Merchandise and Tickets
Exclusive merchandise will be available at the venue, including a BIG acrylic stand featuring Tokiyuki and an acrylic stand using newly drawn illustration created specifically for the exhibition.
Two ticket tiers are available: a general admission ticket at ¥3,300 and a goods-included ticket at ¥3,850 (both tax-inclusive). The goods ticket comes with a set of six foil-stamped postcards. Tickets are on sale now.
