October 10 — the birthday of Sakata Gintoki, the protagonist of Gintama by Hideaki Sorachi — has been officially registered as “Gintama Day” by the Japan Anniversary Association. To mark the occasion, a slate of events is planned for October 10, including a live stream and a 10-hour anime marathon on the official Gintama YouTube channel, as well as special screenings at 12 cinemas across Japan.
10-Hour YouTube Stream Starting at 10 a.m.
Both the live stream and the 10-hour anime marathon will kick off simultaneously at 10:00 a.m. on October 10. Elizabeth, the beloved enigmatic character from the series, is set to appear during the live broadcast. Further scheduling details will be announced at a later date.
Special “Tsukkomi & Cheering” Screenings at 12 Cinemas
A special interactive screening event — Celebrate! October 10 Gintama Day: “Shin Gekijouban Gintama -Yoshiwara Daienjo- <Cho Enjo-ban>” Tsukkomi & Cheering Screening — will be held at the following 12 venues:
- Lawson United Cinema Sapporo (Hokkaido)
- Aeon Cinema Shin-Rifu (Miyagi)
- MOVIX Saitama (Saitama)
- Shinjuku Wald 9 and TOHO Cinemas Ikebukuro (Tokyo)
- Yokohama Burg 13 and TOHO Cinemas Ebina (Kanagawa)
- Midland Square Cinema and Cinema World Lalaport Anjo (Aichi)
- Namba Parks Cinema (Osaka)
- Aeon Cinema Okayama (Okayama)

All screenings are scheduled to begin between 6:00 p.m. and 8:00 p.m. Admission is at each theater’s standard pricing, and Movic Tickets are accepted. Attendees will receive a “Gintama Day Sticker” as an entry bonus.
Bonus Gifts: Connecting Battle Illustration Cards
Two additional attendee bonuses have also been revealed:
- Wave 2 — “Tsunagaru Battle Illustration Card <Yorozuya>” distributed from October 2
- Wave 3 — “Tsunagaru Battle Illustration Card <Yoshiwara Tōgenkyō / Yato>” distributed from October 9
When combined, the two cards form a single large illustration. An official visual archive book titled Enbako for Shin Gekijouban Gintama -Yoshiwara Daienjo- has also been announced, with further details to follow.
Stage Greeting and Official “Gintama Day” Certificate Ceremony
On September 26, a stage greeting was held for Shin Gekijouban Gintama -Yoshiwara Daienjo- <Cho Enjo-ban>, attended by voice actors Tomokazu Sugita (Gintoki), Daisuke Sakaguchi (Shinpachi), and Rie Kugimiya (Kagura). During the event, an official certificate recognizing “Gintama Day” was presented in the presence of the Japan Anniversary Association’s secretary-general, with Sugita receiving the certificate on behalf of the production.
Sugita commented: “I’m truly grateful. This is proof of how deeply Gintama has embedded itself in people’s lives. The fact that it passed the review process and was officially registered means awareness of ‘October 10 is Gintama Day’ will only grow — maybe it’ll even end up on calendars someday. I’d love for it to become a national holiday.” Sakaguchi added: “I hope fans spend Gintama Day in true Gintama fashion — just lounging around doing nothing in particular.” Kugimiya chimed in: “From now on, October 10 is officially a day when it’s perfectly acceptable to be completely lazy!”
Second Stage Greeting and a Surprise Message from Sorachi
A second stage greeting session also took place, with Kohei Onishi (Gintama’s original first editor) and Hiromitsu Higuchi (third-generation anime producer) joining the three voice actors on stage.
The highlight of the event was a surprise written message from creator Hideaki Sorachi, read aloud to the audience. Sorachi confessed: “Honestly, I thought it was going to flop. Gintama’s particular brand of humor seemed hard to translate into anime, and even if it could be done, I wasn’t sure people would get it. But just having people raise their hands and say they wanted to make Gintama with me was enough. If they had fun making it, I considered the goal achieved — it could have ended quickly and I wouldn’t have minded. I didn’t interfere at all. I was only expecting manga royalties. I never imagined the anime would boost them that much. Thank you.”
Sorachi also shared a behind-the-scenes casting anecdote: “Shinpachi and Kagura were decided the moment I heard their voices. Gintoki took a lot of deliberation. During the audition, there was a moment where Sugita’s voice cracked into a higher pitch — it reminded me of Toshihiko Seki’s performance as Matsuda in YAWARA!, and I’m a big Seki fan, so I pushed for Sugita.”
