Re:Zero − Starting Life in Another World Season 4, Episode 15 (Episode 81 overall), titled “A Single-Minded Star,” has aired — and it delivered one of the most emotionally charged installments of the entire run, capped by a jaw-dropping discovery in the library that sent viewers into a frenzy.

Reid and Roy — The Mystery Explained

Building on last week’s bombshell that the first Sword Saint, Reid Astrea, appears to be the same person as gluttony Archbishop Roy Alphard, Julius clarifies the situation this episode: the body belongs to Roy, but the mind is still Reid’s. Reid was once “eaten” by Roy, yet his extraordinary willpower allowed him to wrest back control of the body — and with it, the ability to descend from the tower’s second stratum.

Viewers were floored: “He just hijacked Roy from the inside?!” and “Reid’s soul is on a completely different level.” Subaru would soon feel that power firsthand, at the cost of his life.

Shaula’s 400-Year Wait

After looping back via Return by Death, Subaru faces the scorpion witch-beast problem and asks Shaula point-blank: “If I told you to die, would you?” — hoping to remove her before her mysterious scorpion transformation occurs. Without a moment’s hesitation, Shaula agrees, because everything she does is for her Otou-sama (Master — Subaru).

For 400 years, Shaula waited alone for a master whose face she didn’t even know. She set the dinner table for someone who hadn’t arrived yet. Her devotion is absolute and entirely sincere — every over-the-top reaction she shows is genuine.

Yet there is one thing she refuses to reveal: the fifth rule of the trial. No matter how many times Subaru asks, she insists it doesn’t exist. When he presses harder, her voice breaks in a way viewers had never heard before:

“It’s only been four days, you know? Just four days since you came to this tower… If I tell you, you’ll figure out how to clear the trial, and then… our time together will…”

She dissolves into tears, unable to finish the sentence. Four hundred years of waiting, and only four days of actually being together — she couldn’t bear for it to end.

Viewers were deeply moved: “400 years of waiting and it’s basically over in two days — that’s heartbreaking,” “Shaula is truly devoted to one person,” and “Someone please save her!”

Subaru’s Resolve — “I Can Save You”

Once Subaru learns the fifth rule — “Destruction of the trial is not forbidden” — he throws himself off the tower without hesitation to trigger Return by Death. Shaula, mid-transformation into her scorpion form, still reaches out desperately to catch him, unable to let him be hurt.

Subaru meets her with a resolute smile and says: “I’m allowed to save you, aren’t I?” The fight is no longer just about clearing the trial — it’s about saving Shaula.

Fans erupted in praise: “Natsuki Subaru is too cool,” “This is the most badass scene in Re:Zero history.” They also marveled at voice actor Kawanishi Kengo‘s performance as Rai/Roy, whose speech patterns gradually shifted into Reid’s cadence in real time: “His voice acting is incredible!”

Subaru’s Breaking Point — and a Book That Changes Everything

Despite loop after loop, Subaru cannot find a solution: Reid is unbeatable, leaving the tower triggers Shaula’s transformation, and Rai remains a separate threat. Eventually, fear paralyzes him completely. He despairs at his own weakness and longs for the “Natsuki Subaru” whose memories are gone.

Then, in the tower’s archive, he notices something strange on a shelf. Crawling over to it, he pulls out a book — and the title reads: 菜月 昴 (Natsuki Subaru).

The reaction was immediate: “Wait — why does a book with Subaru’s name exist here?!” “Goosebumps. Absolute goosebumps.” “The board is about to change completely.”
