สึบารุชูนิ้วขึ้นหนึ่งนิ้วพร้อมประกาศตัวตนในฉากสุดซึ้งของ Re:Zero ซีซัน 4 ตอนที่ 16

⚠ This article contains major spoilers for Re:Zero Season 4 Episode 16.

TV anime Re:Zero − Starting Life in Another World Season 4, Episode 16 — titled “Natsuki Subaru” — aired on September 9, drawing an outpouring of emotional reactions from viewers. Many have called it one of the greatest episodes in the series’ history, and a fitting tribute to the anime’s 10th anniversary.

A Situation With No Way Out

In the lead-up to this episode, Subaru had been battling five simultaneous threats: the clash between Roy Alphard and Reid Astrea, Ley Batenkaitos’ assault, Shaula’s scorpion transformation, and a swarm of magical beasts. No matter which threat he addressed, another would strike from behind. Even after dying and rewinding time 15 times, he could find no way forward.

Cornered and paralyzed by fear, Subaru suddenly notices a strange presence in the library — a Book of the Dead bearing his own name: “Natsuki Subaru.”

Subaru Meets Subaru

Using his newly acquired ability to sense and locate souls, Subaru discovers that the library has been recording every single one of his Return by Death loops — every experience of “Natsuki Subaru” before his memory was lost is preserved within its pages.

Desperate for answers, Subaru traces those memories: his very first arrival in this world, being gutted by Elsa, leaping off a cliff for Rem and Ram, being frozen by Puck, facing off against Petelgeuse, and being devoured by the Great Rabbit. Viewers who had followed the series from the start were initially hit by nostalgia, but as the memories piled up, the mood shifted — “experiencing every death route all at once would destroy anyone’s mind,” one viewer wrote.

Then, in the memory corridor, Subaru comes face to face with his past self — the Subaru who still had his memories.

“Hey, my other self.” — Past Subaru

Calm and composed, past Subaru tells him that what he was looking for should already have been found through the memories. But present Subaru isn’t satisfied. He lashes out, venting the frustration that has been building inside him:

“That’s why I couldn’t save anyone! I keep letting everyone die! No matter how many times I repeat it, I can’t save anyone because I’m too weak!!”

The Integration of Memories — and Subaru’s True Return

After letting it all out, present Subaru finally calms down. He tells his past self everything that happened after the memory loss, and then offers his heartfelt thanks — for apologizing to their parents, for saving Otto and Garfiel, for protecting Petra, Frederica, and the people of Arlam Village, for bringing Beatrice out of her library, and for falling in love with Emilia.

What follows is a true integration of memories: present Subaru is absorbed into past Subaru. Viewers were moved to tears, with many noting, “Only Subaru could entrust himself to himself.”

With present Subaru gone, Gluttony Archbishop Louis Arneb — who had been lurking in the memory corridor — finds her plan shattered. Overcome with fear, she expels Subaru back into the real world.

Restored and whole, Subaru sprints to Emilia’s side as she battles Ley, raises a single finger to the sky, and declares:

“My name is Natsuki Subaru! Emilia-tan’s number one knight!!”

Viewers erupted: “Welcome back, Subaru!” “I can’t see through my tears.” The return of the “Emilia-tan” nickname — absent for so long — sent fans into a frenzy, and Emilia’s smile upon realizing Subaru was truly back pushed many over the edge.

A Perfect Episode for the 10th Anniversary

The episode also fits squarely into Re:Zero’s well-known tradition of “character name episodes” being landmark installments — and this one did not disappoint. The fact that it revisited the entire history of the series from episode one made it feel like a deliberate anniversary celebration, even if unintentional.

Episode 17 airs September 16. Season 4 is heading into its final stretch.
