Sentai Filmworks announced on Thursday that it will bring the 4K restoration of the anime film Ninja Scroll (Japanese title: Jubei Ninpu-cho) to theaters across the United States and Canada on October 4, 5, and 7.
4K Restoration Supervised by the Director
Sentai Filmworks initiated and carried out the film’s full restoration and remastering under the direct supervision of original director Yoshiaki Kawajiri. The process began with a 4K scan of the original 35 mm negative film at 3,840 x 2,160 resolution, followed by detailed repair work and color correction.
In addition to the theatrical screenings, the company plans to release a 4K UHD Blu-ray Disc Steelbook Limited Edition in early 2027.

HIDIVE describes the film as follows:
When Jubei saves a female ninja from a horrific incident, he thinks the matter is over. In truth, it is only the beginning. The two investigate the mysterious deaths of an entire village and uncover a conspiracy tied to terrifying demonic powers. The closer they get to the truth, the more desperately those demonic forces try to silence Jubei and his companion.
History of Ninja Scroll
The film was produced by Studio Madhouse, with Kawajiri serving as director, writer, and character designer. It first opened in Japan in 1993 and later gained major popularity through cable television broadcasts in the United States, before Sentai Filmworks acquired the film’s license in 2012.
In November 2024, HIDIVE brought the film back to streaming in both Japanese with English subtitles and the original English dub. The film had previously streamed on platforms including HIDIVE and Hulu.
In September 2024, Iconic Events Releasing and Anime Expo also screened the film under the AX Cinema Nights banner to celebrate the 30th anniversary of its U.S. release.
TV Series and Other Media
In addition to the film, Ninja Scroll also inspired a 13-episode TV anime series, likewise produced by Madhouse, which aired in 2003. Discotek released the series on Blu-ray Disc in 2020, while Urban Vision previously released it on VHS and DVD from 2003 to 2005.
