The ABEMA Anime Matsuri 2026 event on Saturday brought a major announcement for fans of classic anime: the beloved gourmet manga Oishinbo is returning as a brand-new television anime series titled Shin Oishinbo (New Oishinbo).

Announced at Shinei Animation’s 50th Anniversary

Shinei Animation revealed the project during a special stage presentation celebrating the studio’s 50th anniversary at the event. The studio will be producing the new series, with further details to be announced at a later date.

About the Original Manga

Oishinbo was created by storywriter Tetsu Kariya and artist Akira Hanasaki, launching in 1983. Publisher Shogakukan released the 111th volume in December 2014, after which the manga has remained on hiatus.

The series centers on a heated culinary rivalry between the “Ultimate Menu” project of the newspaper Tōzai Shimbun and the “Supreme Menu” championed by renowned gourmand Yuzan Kaibara, exploring the depth and philosophy of Japanese food culture.

Previous Adaptations

Shinei Animation previously adapted the manga into a television anime that aired from 1988 to 1992, spanning 136 episodes plus two additional specials. The franchise has also inspired multiple live-action television series and a live-action film.

Viz Media has published five volumes of Oishinbo digitally via VizManga.com and the Viz Manga App, as well as in print.

Further details on Shin Oishinbo — including cast, staff, and air date — are yet to be announced.
