Sony Pictures is set to co-finance and distribute the live-action Naruto film, with production scheduled to begin in spring 2027.
Director and Producers
Destin Daniel Cretton — known for Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings and the upcoming Spider-Man: Brand New Day — is attached to direct. Cretton is also producing through his production company Hisako alongside Jeyun Munford. Avi Arad, Ari Arad, and Emmy Yu of Arad Productions, as well as Jeremy Latcham, are listed as producers.
Global Casting Search Underway
The official Naruto franchise website announced on July 10 that a worldwide casting search has launched for the three lead roles: Naruto, Sasuke, and Sakura. Casting for additional characters will be announced at a later date.
The Hollywood Reporter had previously noted that Charles Melton (Riverdale, Beef) was in final negotiations to play the mentor ninja Kakashi Hatake.
A Long Road to Production
The project has been in development for over a decade. The Tracking Board first reported in 2015 that Lionsgate had secured the rights to adapt the manga, with Michael Gracey (The Greatest Showman) in talks to direct. A Naruto and Boruto stage presentation at Jump Festa in 2016 confirmed that Lionsgate and Gracey were actively developing the film, with original creator Masashi Kishimoto involved in the production.
In November 2023, Variety reported that Tasha Huo (Red Sonja, Tomb Raider animated series) was writing the screenplay. It remains unclear whether others previously attached to the project are still involved.
About the Naruto Franchise
Kishimoto launched the ninja manga in Shueisha’s Weekly Shonen Jump in 1999, concluding the series in November 2014. The franchise has since expanded into the Naruto and Naruto Shippūden TV anime series, OVAs, multiple anime films, spinoff manga, the Boruto sequel manga and anime, novels, stage plays, and video games.
Kishimoto is also set to launch a new manga in the franchise titled Naruto Shadow Rising.
