Background
Kyoto Animation first announced the anime adaptation in July 2018. The source novel earned an honorable mention in the full-length novel category at the 8th Kyoto Animation Awards in May 2017 — the sole award given out that year. Kyoto Animation’s KA Esuma Bunko imprint published the novel in August 2018, with illustrations by Kazumi Ikeda and art and backgrounds credited to Momoka Nagatani.
Story
Set in the summer of 1907 — the 40th year of the Meiji era — the story follows Inako Momokawa, a 15-year-old girl living in the Fushimi district of Kyoto. The second daughter of a sake-brewing family, Inako can never seem to do anything right and faces her father’s scolding daily. Her only solace is her faith and prayers to the gods.
While visiting Fushimi Inari Shrine one day, she encounters Kihachi Sakamoto, a free-spirited young man who dismisses the gods entirely and speaks boldly of an approaching age of electricity. When Inako’s father abruptly begins arranging her marriage without her input, she nearly loses all hope — until Kihachi helps her recognize her true desire to break free from her family.
The only way to stop the marriage is to find a mysterious book known as the “Electrical Catalog,” a childhood prediction book about electricity that Kihachi once wrote. His older brother Seiroku took the book, and its current whereabouts are unknown. Together, Inako and Kihachi set off on a search that takes them across Kyoto and Shiga prefectures.
