The hit anime film THE FIRST SLAM DUNK is set to return to the big screen across Japan. Officially titled “THE FIRST SLAM DUNK 2027 in cinema,” the nationwide theatrical run is scheduled from March 20 to April 1, 2027. The announcement was made on the official website on August 29, followed by a post on the official X (formerly Twitter) account, accompanied by a new visual and the tagline: “Spring. The season of beginnings. That summer begins again.”

SLAM DUNK is a boys’ basketball manga by Takehiko Inoue, serialized in Shueisha’s Weekly Shonen Jump from issue 42 of 1990 through issue 27 of 1996. The series follows the human growth of high school basketball players and has sold over 185 million copies worldwide, published across 30 countries and regions. A TV anime adaptation aired from October 1993 to March 1996, and the series is widely credited with inspiring a generation of young people to take up basketball.
About the Film
Released in December 2022, THE FIRST SLAM DUNK was written and directed by original manga creator Takehiko Inoue himself. The story centers on Ryota Miyagi, the quick-footed point guard of the Shohoku team, who grew up in Okinawa chasing the legacy of his older brother — a celebrated local basketball player. By his second year of high school, Ryota finds himself alongside Sakuragi, Rukawa, Akagi, and Mitsui at the Inter-High tournament, where Shohoku is about to face the reigning champions, Sannoh Kogyo.
The film enjoyed a long theatrical run through August 2023 and has since been revived in cinemas multiple times, accumulating a total box office gross of ¥16.67 billion — making it one of the most successful anime films of its era.

Just ahead of this announcement, on August 29–30, a free outdoor screening of the film was held at Meiji Park in Tokyo, drawing significant attention from fans and further building anticipation for the 2027 return.
