The theatrical anime series Yamato yo Towa ni REBEL3199 — a reimagining of the 1980 film Yamato yo Towa ni — has revealed that veteran singer Junko Yagami will perform the ending theme “Haruka e, Eien e” (Toward the Distant, Toward Eternity) for Chapter 7: Nijiiro no Rinne (Rainbow Reincarnation), the series’ final chapter. A music video for the song has also been released alongside seven new character visuals.
A Song Rooted in 40-Year-Old Legacy
“Haruka e, Eien e” is based on “Shin Ginga Tanjou,” a piece composed by Yasushi Miyagawa for the original 1980 film. The track has been newly arranged by Akira Miyagawa, Yasushi’s son, with lyrics written by Yohei Matsui, who previously penned the Chapter 4 ending theme “Hikari no Nami.” Junko Yagami is no stranger to the Yamato franchise — she sang the theme for Space Battleship Yamato: Final Chapter back in 1983, making this reunion more than four decades in the making.
Comments from the Artists
Junko Yagami: “I never imagined I would get to sing a Yamato theme again after more than 40 years. The emotion of recording ‘Love Supreme’ live with an orchestra under Yasushi Miyagawa’s baton in 1983 has never left me. From the moment I received ‘Haruka e, Eien e,’ I felt the vast cosmic world that Akira Miyagawa paints. It’s a song with an unusually low register for me, but I hope everyone will give it a listen.”
Akira Miyagawa: “My father Yasushi was a huge fan of Junko Yagami, and Junko Yagami started singing because she admired The Peanuts. Yohei Matsui and I simply set the table between them. One could call this a new song by Yasushi Miyagawa — or perhaps better put, a long-overdue act of filial devotion.”
Yohei Matsui: “In 3199, every character is asked how they choose to live. I felt the anchor that roots each person to the time and place of their birth — and the struggle of weighing it. I wrote the lyrics for those who lift that anchor and set sail, layering them onto Yamato’s voyage toward the edge of space and time. A person can light only one flame in a lifetime, but that flame shows you are here, and it can light someone else’s path.”
Seven Character Visuals, Seven Colors
Seven character visuals have been released alongside the song announcement. Each image places a key character against one of seven distinct background colors, visually echoing the chapter’s title, “Rainbow Reincarnation.”
