About the Series

Yamishibai: Japanese Ghost Stories is a horror anthology of roughly six-minute shorts, presenting urban-legend-inspired tales set in contemporary Japan. The series draws its distinctive visual style from kamishibai — the illustrated paper-theater storytelling tradition of the Shōwa era.

The first season debuted in July 2013, and the most recent entry, Season 16, began airing on January 11. The franchise has also spawned the spinoff The World Yamizukan (spring 2017) and the Ninja Collection spinoff anime (July 2020), both of which were streamed by Crunchyroll. A live-action adaptation of the series premiered in Japan in September 2020 and was likewise streamed on Crunchyroll.
