The live-action film Kingdom: Tamashii no Kessen, based on the manga by Hara Yasuhisa, held its opening-day stage greeting on July 17 at TOHOシネマズ Roppongi Hills in Tokyo. The full cast and director took the stage, including Yamazaki Kento (Shin), Yoshizawa Ryo (Ei Sei), Hashimoto Kanna (Ka Ryo Ten), Shison Jun (Mou Ten), Kamio Fuju (Ou Hon), Yamada Hiroki (Ban Goku), Miyoshi Ayaka (Ka Rin), Toyokawa Etsushi (Hyou Kou), Sakaguchi Kenji (Kan Ki), Kaname Jun (Tou), Oguri Shun (Ri Boku), and director Sato Shinsuke.
A Record-Breaking Opening
By 3:00 p.m. on its opening day, the film had already drawn 124% of the audience that the previous installment — Kingdom: Daishougun no Kikan, the series’ all-time box-office record holder — achieved at the same point. Yamazaki Kento opened the event with confidence: “The new chapter of Kingdom begins! I believe we’ve made the best film yet.” Yoshizawa expressed gratitude to fans for their continued support of the series.
Cast Highlights Their Favourite Scenes
Each cast member shared a scene they wanted audiences to watch closely. Yamazaki pointed to the cavalry action sequences, saying they deliver a scale that can only be fully appreciated in a cinema. Yoshizawa highlighted the improved CGI, noting that “the way soldiers are sent flying when armies clash looks completely real — you’ll feel the sheer enormity of the battle.”
Hashimoto Kanna reminded audiences that the film offers more than action, with deeply emotional storylines, and recommended revisiting earlier entries in the series. Series newcomers Shison Jun and Kamio Fuju praised the meticulous detail in costumes and props, and the overall ambition of the production.
Yamada Hiroki, a self-described Kingdom fan, made a pitch to first-timers: “Even if you go just because Oguri Shun is in it, you’ll get drawn right in!” Toyokawa Etsushi jokingly warned the audience: “No blinking — every time you blink, a horse runs 100 metres and Shin cuts down three more people.”
Yoshizawa Ryo Couldn’t Stop Shaking
Sakaguchi Kenji named the scene where all Six Great Generals assemble as his highlight, and noted that three new characters — Ou Sen, Chou Tou, and Mou Gou — make their debut in this film. That prompted Yoshizawa, who plays King Ei Sei — the figure before whom those generals kneel — to recall the shoot with a grin: “It was an incredible sight. Every one of my seniors was kneeling before me. I couldn’t stop shaking.” The audience erupted in laughter.
Miyoshi Ayaka, also a newcomer to the series, said each of the six kingdoms brings its own distinct appeal. Kaname Jun revealed that most of the film was shot domestically, marvelling that “you can achieve this kind of scale without going to China.” Oguri Shun, finding that his fellow cast members had already said everything he had planned to say, managed to squeeze out: “The feathers on my costume have been improved since the last film — please take another look.” The crowd laughed.
Director and Lead Close the Event
Director Sato Shinsuke said the team had poured everything they had built up over the series into this film, and hoped it would leave audiences astonished. Yamazaki Kento closed the event by saying: “Everything we have built together with this incredible cast and crew has been embraced with so much love. I truly hope the passion for Kingdom keeps spreading further and further.”
