About Nihon Sankoku

Nihon Sankoku is a manga by Ikka Matsuki serialized on Shogakukan’s MangaOne app and Ura Sunday website. The story is set in a near-future Japan where civilization has collapsed due to nuclear war, natural disasters, and corrupt rule. A revolution divides the country into three states. Amid the chaos, Aoki Misuma, an ordinary provincial official, rises to fight for the goal of “unifying Japan” with his vast knowledge and razor-sharp rhetoric. The work has surpassed 1 million copies in circulation and has been adapted into a TV anime directed by Kazuaki Terasawa with animation production by Studio Kafka.

Episode 10 Summary (Spoilers)

On Sakuratora’s side, after executing his close subordinate Hei Miyagi in accordance with the law, the organization begins restructuring. At a newly established military council, a plan called “Operation General Winter” is drawn up to wipe out the Yamato army by luring Yamato reinforcements to Sero Fortress and forcing them to lose against the brutal cold of Hokuriku. However, many viewers noted that the plan seemed loose, with comments such as “Would they really chase them that far…?” and “Denki Taira is too smart, he would see through it immediately.”

Meanwhile, the Yamato side faces a crisis when the military adviser Kaku collapses. Despite suffering from multiple chronic conditions, he had taken several strong medicines at once in order to go into battle. The military doctor Kada says there is still a chance of recovery, but social media filled with worried reactions.

Aoki Returns with a Thrilling Debate Scene

The moment fans had most been waiting for comes when Aoki arrives at the palace to seek an audience with the emperor, only to be blocked by a hot-tempered captain of the imperial guards. Even after explaining that he has urgent war-related business, he is still refused entry. Worse, the guard demands a bribe, and when Aoki argues, “There is no request from the border army,” the guard’s expression changes and he repeatedly flicks Aoki on the forehead until it turns red. Viewers watched anxiously while waiting to see what would happen next.

Then the long-awaited scene arrives. Aoki strikes back with sharp reasoning: “Would His Majesty prioritize sleep over an urgent matter of war?” and “If a delayed report causes irreversible damage, that would be the true crime of lese-majeste!” Social media exploded with comments such as “His reasoning is airtight!” “I love how Aoki fights with logic!” and “No one can beat Aoki in an argument.”

Denki Taira: An Ever-Growing Sense of Terror

The refreshing mood shifts instantly when Denki Taira, Minister of the Interior, appears. Although he praises Aoki’s eloquence, the fact that he still remembers the execution of Aoki’s wife Koki turns the atmosphere from bright to icy in an instant. Comments such as “Oh, he still remembers…” “It’s scary that he remembers,” and “This guy is terrifying…” poured in. In the very next moment, the head of the arrogant guard who had been showing off is severed with ease.

With Denki Taira’s help, Aoki successfully gains an audience with Emperor Fuji III. Although the atmosphere is tense, the emperor remains endearing by dozing off during the audience, and when he learns of Aoki’s achievements he simply praises him by saying, “That’s really impressive!” Many viewers relaxed and called him “so cute.”

Denki Taira’s terrifying nature becomes even clearer in a scene where he expresses sorrow over the injury of his son Densugi. Viewers, however, read it as “He’s saying something he does not mean…” “His son is just a political tool to him anyway,” and “If he predicted in advance that his son would be injured, that is truly frightening.”

A Second Debate Scene and a Time Bomb Ending

Denki Taira accuses Ryumon of being behind the incident and proposes stripping him of military authority. Everyone in the council agrees, and when the emperor is about to appoint Taira as successor, Aoki stands up and objects, saying, “We should reconsider the transfer of military authority and the dispatch of troops.” The ministers think, “He’s dead now” and “He is definitely getting beheaded,” but Aoki laughs off a female minister’s insult that he is “chasing too much fame,” and counters, “As a minister, is it appropriate to believe rumors and repeat them in front of His Majesty?” Social media erupted again with “Round two of the debate!” and “It’s Aoki’s turn!”

When Taira asks, “Then who is suitable to be the successor?” Aoki answers, “No one is suitable,” and adds, “Reinforcements should not be sent to Fukui.” He then drops a bombshell: “I request an imperial order from His Majesty to withdraw the army.” Episode 10 ends on this cliffhanger, leaving viewers as confused as the ministers in the story: “Withdraw!?” “What is happening!?” and “What exactly is he thinking…?”
