ทีเซอร์โปสเตอร์ GATTO (水の都のネロ) แสดงภาพเนโร แมวดำ ห้อยหัวลงท่ามกลางแสงพระจันทร์เต็มดวงเหนือเมืองเวนิส

Disney & Pixar have officially announced that their upcoming animated feature GATTO — titled 水の都のネロ (Mizuno Miyako no Nero) in Japan — will open in Japanese cinemas in spring 2027. The announcement came alongside the release of a teaser poster and a first teaser trailer.

A Black Cat in the City of Water

Set against the breathtaking canals of Venice, Italy, GATTO follows Nero, a black cat who has long been shunned by superstitious townsfolk as a bad omen. Cast out to the fringes of the underworld, Nero’s life is upended when an unexpected miracle changes everything. The film marks the first time in Disney & Pixar history that a cat takes the lead role in a feature-length animated film.

A Teaser Full of Charm and Comedy

The teaser opens to the ominous strains of “Speak Softly, Love” — the iconic love theme from The Godfather (1972) — setting a moody, underworld atmosphere. That tension is quickly punctured by irresistibly feline behavior. Nero and Rocco, the fearsome boss cat who rules the criminal underworld, are interrogating a suspect over a missing tuna, when Nero simply cannot resist batting at a swinging light bulb overhead. Rocco scolds him sternly — only to find himself equally unable to ignore the dangling light. The clip perfectly captures the helpless, instinct-driven charm of cats.

The teaser poster, meanwhile, shows Nero hanging upside-down against a full moon over a nocturnal Venice, his wide eyes staring out with a look of startled mystery.

A Legendary Creative Team

The film is directed by Enrico Casarosa, whose previous Pixar feature Luca (2021) — also set in Italy — won hearts worldwide. This time, Casarosa pushes the studio’s visuals into entirely new territory, blending a hand-painted, painterly aesthetic with 3D CG animation for a look unlike anything Pixar has produced before.

Producing is Andrea Warren, a veteran of both Luca and Cars 3 (2017). Executive producer is Pete Docter, the creative force behind three Academy Award®-winning Pixar films: Up (2009), Inside Out (2015), and Soul (2020).

Cast

  • Mark Ruffalo as Nero
  • Laurence Fishburne as Rocco

GATTO will be distributed in Japan by Walt Disney Japan. Pixar fans can also look forward to Toy Story 5, which is scheduled to open in Japanese theatres on July 3, 2026, ahead of GATTO’s spring 2027 debut.
