The TV anime Fist of the North Star (北斗の拳 -FIST OF THE NORTH STAR-) has reached its first-cour finale with episode 14, delivering one of the most talked-about episodes of the season.

Airi’s Capture Forces Kenshiro and Rei to Fight

The episode picks up with Kenshiro, Rei, and Mamiya battling the Fang Clan to protect Mamiya’s village. The situation takes a dire turn when Airi — Rei’s sister, whom he believed to be dead — appears as a hostage in the Fang Clan’s hands. Clan boss Fang Daioh demands that Rei kill Kenshiro in exchange for Airi’s life.

Unable to risk losing his sister a second time, Rei has no choice but to comply. Kenshiro urges him to stay calm, reasoning that the Fang Clan won’t actually harm Airi, but Rei’s desperation wins out and the two are forced into a one-on-one duel to the crowd’s roaring approval. Viewers online noted with amusement that Fang Daioh provided surprisingly detailed live commentary on the techniques of Hokuto and Nanto throughout the fight.

During the duel, Kenshiro opens up about the emptiness of revenge — how after his own brutal struggle against Shin, only unbearable loneliness remained. Rei, in turn, admits that being near Kenshiro evokes a nostalgic sense of a more peaceful era.

Mamiya and Airi’s Desperate Acts — and a Stunning Reversal

As the duel intensifies, Airi attempts to bite off her own tongue to end her life rather than be the cause of bloodshed. Simultaneously, Mamiya hurls herself toward a spear, only to be stopped at the last instant by Fang Daioh. Tearfully, Mamiya pleads with Kenshiro and Rei to save the village, declaring she cannot live as a hostage after already sacrificing so much. The scene moved viewers deeply, with many posting that it was just as painful to watch as it was to read in the original manga.

Kenshiro then signals to Rei that he intends to end things with a decisive technique. The two warriors charge at each other and drive simultaneous blows into each other’s chests, collapsing motionless to the ground. The Fang Clan erupts in celebration — but moments later, every member who rushes in to finish off Mamiya and Airi is obliterated in a single strike.

The twist: Kenshiro and Rei had coordinated a feigned death, using a technique to temporarily stop their own heartbeats. Fang Daioh’s stunned reaction — an involuntary cry of “Ajapaa~!”, a slang expression popular in 1940s–50s Japan originating from actor Ban Junzaburo — had viewers erupting in laughter. “I never expected to hear ‘ajapaa’ in the Reiwa era,” one viewer wrote, while others joked, “They got stabbed repeatedly and it did nothing?”

Kenshiro’s Dark Humour and Airi’s Sight Restored

In his subsequent duel with Fang Daioh — whose body had been hardened to steel — Kenshiro effortlessly neutralises him with a pressure-point strike. When Fang Daioh feigns surrender to attempt a surprise attack, Kenshiro calmly says, “Oh, one thing I forgot to mention…” before revealing that Fang Daioh’s death had already been sealed moments earlier. The deadpan timing of the callback delighted viewers who have come to love Kenshiro’s signature brand of dark wit.

With Mamiya and Airi rescued, Kenshiro also heals Airi’s eyesight — she had deliberately blinded herself with chemicals to escape the psychological torment of captivity. “If it weren’t the post-apocalypse, Kenshiro would make a great doctor,” viewers mused, echoing the very “scent of a peaceful era” that Rei had described.

Kenshiro later confides in Rei about the seven scars on his own chest. Rei, despite having sworn vengeance against “the man with seven scars,” insists he would never believe Kenshiro to be the culprit. But when Airi describes the true perpetrator’s features, Kenshiro’s expression darkens — suggesting he knows exactly who is responsible.

Jagi Makes His Entrance — and Fans Go Wild

The episode’s closing scene shifts to a ruined building elsewhere, where a masked man shelters a woman being pursued by thugs. He pulls aside his mask to reveal seven scars on his chest and delivers the iconic line:

“You… say my name.”

The man is Jagi, voiced by Takagi Wataru. The reveal sent viewers into a frenzy on X (formerly Twitter): “JAGI-SAMA IS HERE!!!”, “Everyone loves Jagi-sama,” and “Takagi Wataru as Jagi — perfect casting” were among the most common reactions. Many praised Takagi’s performance specifically, with one viewer writing, “His thug-character voice acting is unmatched in the industry.”
