Toei Animation took the stage at the Annecy International Animation Film Festival in France this week to preview its upcoming hybrid animated feature, Monkey Quest. The film blends 2D and 3D animation, with studio SANZIGEN handling the 3D elements.

Loosely inspired by the Chinese literary classic Journey to the West, Monkey Quest is set in the not-so-distant future and follows Ellie, a 12-year-old girl, and her 1-year-old brother Adam. The siblings free Okon, a long-forgotten protector of Earth, and must battle the villainous Vex across an intergalactic adventure.
