Viz Media announced at its Anime Expo panel on Saturday that the RWBY animated series has been officially greenlit for a Volume 10. The company also debuted a trailer featuring the voice actresses of the four main characters alongside showrunner Kerry Shawcross.
About RWBY
RWBY is an original web animated series created by the late Monty Oum. The story follows four girls, each wielding unique weapons and powers, as they train to become hunters of supernatural beings known as Creatures of Grimm. Rooster Teeth produced nine volumes totalling 117 episodes. Volume 9 began in February 2023 and concluded in March 2024.
The Broader RWBY Franchise
The RWBY franchise has expanded well beyond its web series origins. Studio Shaft produced the television anime RWBY: Ice Queendom, which premiered in Japan in July 2022. Crunchyroll streamed the series both in Japanese and with an English dub.
Viz Media has also published several manga titles under the RWBY banner:
- A manga adaptation by Shirow Miwa, serialised in Shueisha’s Ultra Jump from November 2015 to February 2017, and later in Viz’s English edition of Weekly Shonen Jump from October 2017.
- RWBY: The Official Manga by Bunta Kinami, which ran in Shonen Jump+ from December 2018 to June 2020.
- The RWBY manga anthology series.
Rooster Teeth’s Closure and RWBY’s Future
In March 2024, Rooster Teeth — the studio behind RWBY and gen:LOCK — announced it was shutting down after 21 years of operation. General manager Jordan Levin stated in a memo to staff that the closure was driven by “challenges facing digital media resulting from fundamental shifts in consumer behavior and monetization across platforms, advertising, and patronage.” Parent company Warner Bros. Discovery indicated it would explore options for Rooster Teeth’s intellectual properties, including RWBY and gen:LOCK.
The greenlight of Volume 10 signals that the RWBY franchise will continue under Viz Media’s stewardship, even as the studio that originally brought it to life has closed its doors.
