GKIDS used its panel at Anime Expo to announce a wave of home video releases exclusive to the GKIDS Store, spanning anime films, classic OVAs, and live-action features.
Look Back — 4K UHD Collector’s Edition (September 8)
GKIDS will release a 4K UHD Collector’s Edition of the Look Back anime film on September 8. Based on Tatsuki Fujimoto‘s one-shot manga, the film follows Fujino, a popular student celebrated for her comics in the class newspaper, whose world is upended when her teacher asks her to share the column with Kyomoto, a reclusive truant with stunning artistic talent. What begins as jealousy gradually gives way to a deep bond rooted in their shared love of drawing.
The film opened in Japan in June 2024, debuting at #2 in ticket sales but #1 in weekend earnings, selling 135,000 tickets and grossing approximately 227 million yen (around US$1.40 million) in its first three days. GKIDS screened it in North America in October 2024, where it earned US$688,253 in its opening weekend.
GKIDS also confirmed it will release a live-action adaptation of Look Back in theaters across the U.S., Canada, the U.K., and Ireland in 2026. The film is currently in post-production and is set to open in Japan the same year.
Angel’s Egg (Tenshi no Tamago) — 4K UHD Collector’s Edition (September 22)
On September 22, GKIDS will ship a 4K UHD Collector’s Edition of the restored Angel’s Egg (天使のたまご), the 1985 original video anime directed by Mamoru Oshii. The new 4K restoration was scanned from the original 35mm film negative and supervised by Oshii himself. GKIDS screened the remaster in North America for two days in November 2025.
The OVA was produced at Studio DEEN. Oshii co-conceived the story with Yoshitaka Amano, who also handled art direction, while Oshii wrote the screenplay and directed. Music was composed by Yoshihiro Kanno, and the film was produced by Hiroshi Hasegawa, Masao Kobayashi, Mitsunori Miura, and Yutaka Wada.
Set in a submerged city, the story centers on a young girl who carefully guards a large egg, and a boy armed with a gun who arrives searching for a bird from his dreams. A tentative sense of sympathy begins to form between the two.
LOVE & POP — Hideaki Anno’s Live-Action Debut
GKIDS also has home video plans for LOVE & POP, Hideaki Anno‘s 1998 live-action feature debut — made after the original Neon Genesis Evangelion anime and before Shin Godzilla and Shin Kamen Rider. GKIDS screened the film in North American theaters in February 2025.
Adapted from Ryū Murakami‘s 1996 novel Love and Pop: Topaz II (Gentosha), the film is set in July 1997 Tokyo and follows Hiromi, a high school girl who goes on paid dates with older men in a race to earn ¥128,000 before a mall closes so she can buy a coveted topaz ring. Shot on handheld digicams with distorted lenses and unconventional angles, the film is a raw portrait of teenage ennui in late-1990s Shibuya.
LINDA LINDA LINDA — 4K Restoration for 20th Anniversary
Nobuhiro Yamashita‘s beloved 2005 film LINDA LINDA LINDA returns in a new 4K restoration celebrating its 20th anniversary. GKIDS screened the remaster at the Tribeca Film Festival in New York City in June 2025.
The film follows an all-girls high school rock band — Kei, Kyoko, and Nozomi — who must find a new lead vocalist in just three days before their school festival. Their unlikely recruit is Song, a Korean exchange student with minimal Japanese, played by Doona Bae (The Host, Broker). The soundtrack blends tracks from THE BLUE HEARTS and Base Ball Bear with original music by James Iha of the Smashing Pumpkins. The film was originally released on DVD by Viz Pictures in 2007.
your name. — 4K Theatrical Return and Home Video for 10th Anniversary
Finally, GKIDS confirmed that Makoto Shinkai‘s your name. (君の名は。) will return to theaters in a 4K remaster on August 14 to mark its 10th anniversary. A 4K UHD Steelbook and Blu-ray Disc release will follow on August 25.
