The official website for the Red River (Sora wa Akai Kawa no Hotori) television anime — based on Chie Shinohara‘s shōjo manga — announced on Wednesday that Minami Takayama and Kazuhiko Inoue have joined the cast as the mother and father of protagonist Yuri, respectively. The casting carries a nostalgic touch: Takayama previously voiced Yuri herself, and Inoue voiced co-lead Kail, in a drama CD produced for the original manga.

Story

Yuri is a cheerful Japanese girl riding high after acing her college entrance exam and sharing her first kiss with her childhood-friend-turned-boyfriend. Her fortunes quickly turn strange, however — water seems to churn and ripple whenever she gets close to it. One night, hands reach up from a puddle in the street and drag her under. She wakes in an ancient Middle Eastern village, is seized by armed soldiers, and is brought to a queen’s palace to serve as a human sacrifice.

About the Manga

Chie Shinohara serialized the original manga in Shogakukan’s Shōjo Comic (Sho-Comi) from 1995 to 2002, spanning 28 volumes. Viz Media published the English edition between 2004 and 2010, and began re-releasing it in 3-in-1 omnibus editions in October 2024; the seventh omnibus volume arrived on April 21. The manga also inspired a stage production by the celebrated all-female Takarazuka Revue troupe in 2018.
