It has been officially announced that Wakatsuki Jun‘s manga Watashi wo Center ni Suru to Chikaimasuka? (“Do You Swear to Make Me the Center?”) will receive a TV anime adaptation. Alongside the announcement, the first teaser visual has been unveiled, along with a celebratory illustration and comment from the author.
Story Overview
The series follows Natsuno Mizuki, a member of a nationally popular idol group who sits dead last in the group’s popularity rankings, and Okuda Koichi, her most devoted fan. Together, the two aim to climb from the very bottom all the way to the coveted center position.
Their journey begins when their parents remarry, forcing Koichi to suddenly share a home with Mizuki. He soon discovers her secret: she freezes up in front of people, unable to smile or speak naturally — a fatal flaw for an idol that has left her on the verge of graduation from the group. Undeterred, Koichi passionately argues that Mizuki has what it takes to be center, and his conviction ultimately inspires her to take on the challenge herself.
Free Campaign and New Volume
To celebrate the anime announcement, Magazine Pocket is running a free-reading campaign for volumes 1 and 2 of the manga, available from July 9 through July 15 at 23:59. Additionally, volume 6 — the latest installment of the series — goes on sale on July 9.
Comment from Author Wakatsuki Jun
“No way! Watashi-Sen is getting an anime! I’m so shocked — it honestly feels like a dream. Since this is my first serialized work, I was still fumbling around not knowing left from right, so when my editor first mentioned the possibility of an anime, I was happy but honestly more anxious than anything. But the incredibly reliable anime production staff blew all those worries away. They thought deeply about who Koichi and Zukki are as characters, and both the script and the character designs turned out wonderfully. Thank you so much!! I can’t wait to see Melstre singing and dancing, and to see Koichi waving his penlight!”
