The picture book Papuwa-kun, a brand-new work by manga artist Shibata Ami — creator of the beloved series Nankoku Shōnen Papuwa-kun — went on sale today, July 9, published by Jitsugyo no Nihonsha. Alongside the release, the official Papuwa-kun website has published a special read-aloud audio performance by popular voice actor Kaji Yuki.
A Classic Returns
Nankoku Shōnen Papuwa-kun first launched in Monthly Shōnen Gangan (Enix, now Square Enix) in 1991, winning fans over with its surreal humor, colorful cast of characters, and heartfelt themes of friendship. The new picture book is entirely drawn from scratch by Shibata, and centers on the simple, wholehearted joy of making friends — bringing back Papuwa-kun, Chappy, and the lively crew of Papuwa Island in vivid colors and a rhythmic, picture-book style all its own.
Kaji Yuki Takes On 7 Roles
Kaji Yuki’s involvement came about through a natural set of connections: he is a father raising a five-year-old child, regularly participates in children’s events, and had built a relationship with Shibata through social media. In the read-aloud audio, he single-handedly voices seven roles — the narrator, Papuwa-kun, Chappy, Shintaro, Tanno-kun, Ito-kun, and Eguchi-kun. Listeners are encouraged to follow along with the physical book, turning the pages as they listen.
