The production team behind the summer original TV anime Sayonara Lala has released the synopsis and preview scene cuts for Episode 2, “Running Through Shiga”, set to air on Sunday, July 12, 2026.
About Sayonara Lala
Sayonara Lala is an original TV anime created to commemorate the 15th anniversary of Studio Kinema Citrus, the studio behind acclaimed titles such as Made in Abyss, My Happy Marriage, The Rising of the Shield Hero, and Shoujo☆Kageki Revue Starlight. The story draws inspiration from the classic fairy tale The Little Mermaid, following mermaid princess Lala as she is reborn in Lake Biwa, Shiga Prefecture, 200 years after her original tale ended in tragedy.
The series is directed by Takushi Koide, a native of Shiga Prefecture making his directorial debut, with series composition by Anna Kawahara and character design by Shiori Tani.
Story Overview
Once upon a time, there was a mermaid princess named Lala, raised with love by her father, the king of the sea, and her sisters. One day she fell hopelessly in love with a human prince on land. Determined to reach him, she drank a potion given to her by the witch Grace that transformed her into a human — but the potion carried a deadly condition: if she failed to find “true love,” she would dissolve into seafoam and vanish forever. In the end, Lala’s wish went unfulfilled, and she faded away into the ocean.
Two hundred years later, the mermaid princess Lala is reborn in Lake Biwa. This time, she is determined to find that “true love” at last.
Episode 2 Synopsis — “Running Through Shiga”
Having been reborn in Lake Biwa, Lala reunites with the witch Grace on land. Grace tells her that in order to save her family, she must forge a bond of “true love” with a human. But everything in Shiga is completely new to Lala, and she finds herself overwhelmed at every turn…
