The production team behind TV anime Sayonara Lara (さよならララ) has released a behind-the-scenes making-of video titled “Sayonara Lara ga Dekiru Made -Behind the Scenes- OP Seisaku-hen”, offering an approximately nine-minute look at how the show’s opening sequence came together.
Cel Animation in the Digital Age
The opening theme, also titled “Sayonara Lara” and performed by Ikimonogakari, features segments animated on traditional cel animation — a rarity in modern production. The making-of video documents the entire journey from early planning meetings through to the actual shoot, with particular focus on the cel photography process.
The footage reveals that the team first had to search for a cinematographer and equipment capable of shooting cel animation. When they finally located suitable gear, they discovered the batteries were dead and the machinery was broken — meaning repairs had to come before a single frame could be shot.
Director Koide on the Drive for an Original Opening
The video also captures candid remarks from director Koide Takushi, including his core motivation for the ambitious approach:
“Since this is an original title we created ourselves, I wanted the opening to be truly original too. I kept thinking about how we could possibly pull that off.”
The full version of the making-of video will be included in the Blu-ray / DVD BOX Vol. 1, set for release on 25 September.
About Sayonara Lara
Sayonara Lara is an original anime created to celebrate the 15th anniversary of studio Kinema Citrus. Airing since July, the series follows Lara, a mermaid princess who fell in love with a human prince 200 years ago, only to dissolve into seafoam when her love went unrequited. She is reborn at Lake Biwa in Shiga Prefecture and sets out in search of true love.
