With Japan’s “Beach Day” falling on July 31, the color blue is very much on fans’ minds — and the anime world is full of characters who wear it proudly, from hair and eyes to costumes and special abilities. Anime! Anime! ran its annual reader survey asking “Which anime character best represents the color blue?” between July 14 and 20, 2026, collecting 218 responses. Respondents were approximately 45% male and 55% female; around 35% were aged 19 or under, 20% were in their 20s, and 25% were in their 30s.
No. 1 — Gojo Satoru (Jujutsu Kaisen)
With roughly 5% of the vote, Gojo Satoru claimed the top spot for the third year in a row. The Special Grade sorcerer and Jujutsu High teacher is widely regarded as the most powerful sorcerer of the modern era — even if his laid-back attitude regularly exasperates his students.
Readers pointed to his striking blue eyes, known as the Six Eyes, as a key reason: “The moment those vivid blue eyes are revealed from behind his blindfold is unforgettable — especially against his white hair.” Beyond his appearance, blue runs through nearly every aspect of the character: the Season 2 opening theme “Ao no Sumika” (Blue Dwelling), the blue-lensed sunglasses he wore as a student, and his Cursed Technique Jujutsu “Ao” (Blue), which generates an attractive force. Fans noted that blue connects Gojo across his looks, abilities, and even his soundtrack.
No. 2 — Miki Sayaka (Puella Magi Madoka☆Magica)
Miki Sayaka made a dramatic leap from a tied 14th place last year all the way to second, finishing just a hair behind the top spot. Madoka Kaname’s cheerful, energetic classmate contracts with Kyubey to become a magical girl.
Voters highlighted her all-blue aesthetic: “Her Soul Gem is blue, her hair is a blue bob, and her blue-and-white magical girl costume suits her perfectly.” Others appreciated a more layered connection: “Unlike the typical cool, reserved blue character, Sayaka is the complete opposite — passionate and headstrong. But she also carries a youthful, unrefined ‘blueness’ that leads her into genuinely heartbreaking moments.” Eyes are now on her upcoming appearance in Puella Magi Madoka☆Magica: Walpurgis no Kaiten, set to open in theaters on August 28.
No. 3 — Tomioka Giyuu (Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba)
Tomioka Giyuu climbed from a tied fifth place last year into the top three, earning around 4% of the vote. The Water Hashira — one of the Demon Slayer Corps’ highest-ranking swordsmen — is quiet and unapproachable on the surface, but devastatingly precise in battle.
“The water-effect visuals that accompany his techniques are every bit as powerful as the Water Hashira title suggests,” one reader wrote. Others were drawn to his deep blue eyes: “There’s something fragile and serene about them that perfectly matches his mysterious, emotionally guarded personality — it’s a cool charm that’s hard to resist.”
