The official Crayon Shin-chan (クレヨンしんちゃん) YouTube channel is currently streaming a fan-favourite episode for free in a limited-time window — and it’s one that has anime enthusiasts buzzing all over again. The episode in question is the TV Special: “Let’s Go to the Villa!” (テレビスペシャル 別荘に行くゾ), celebrated for having its storyboards and key animation handled entirely by acclaimed director Masaaki Yuasa (湯浅政明).

A National Treasure Running for Over Three Decades

Crayon Shin-chan began as a manga by Yoshito Usui (臼井儀人), serialised in Manga Action from 1990. The TV anime launched in 1992 and quickly grew into a beloved national institution enjoyed by audiences of all ages. The series follows five-year-old Shinnosuke Nohara and his family — salaryman father Hiroshi, spirited mother Misae, infant sister Himawari, and pet dog Shiro — as they stumble into one chaotic adventure after another.

The theatrical film series kicked off in 1993 with Crayon Shin-chan: Action Kamen vs. Haigure Maou, and the franchise reached its 33rd film in July 2026 with Crayon Shin-chan: Kiki Kaikkai! Ora no Youkai Bake-shon.

A 1998 Episode Elevated by Yuasa’s Touch

Originally broadcast on 12 July 1998, the special follows the Nohara family as they head to their department chief’s villa in Karuizawa to escape the summer heat — only to find it buried in dust, turning a relaxing getaway into a comedic ordeal.

What sets this episode apart is that the storyboards and animation were handled by Masaaki Yuasa, the visionary director behind Inu-Oh, The Tatami Galaxy, The Night Is Short, Walk on Girl, and Keep Your Hands Off Eizouken!. Yuasa is also the co-founder of studio Science SARU, responsible for acclaimed recent titles such as Dandadan and Tengoku Daimakyou.

His ties to Crayon Shin-chan run deep: he joined the TV anime staff in 1992 and contributed to multiple theatrical films from the very first entry onward, even handling storyboards, setting design, and character design for Henderland no Daibouken.

Fans Overwhelmed by the Quality

The re-release has sparked an outpouring of admiration online. Viewers have been sharing reactions such as:

  • “This episode is insane.”
  • “The animation, composition, and use of light and colour are on a completely different level.”
  • “The animation feels just like the classic Shin-chan films — so much fun to watch.”
  • “I genuinely love this episode.”
  • “The colour palette, the vividness of that summer sunlight…”
  • “The episode is so polished it feels like a full feature film.”
  • “Thank you to the official channel!”
  • “God-tier animation.”
  • “The density packed into just seven minutes is unbelievable.”

The TV Special “Let’s Go to the Villa!” is available to watch for free on the official Crayon Shin-chan YouTube channel until 25 August 2026. Don’t miss it.
