It has been officially announced that Tenkaichi: Nihon Saikyō Bugeisha Kettei-sen, the manga drawn by Azuma Kyōtarō based on the original story by Nakamaru Yōsuke, will be adapted into a TV anime series premiering in April 2027. Alongside the announcement, the production team released the full cast lineup, staff details, a teaser visual, and a teaser PV all at once.

About the Series

Described as an “異種武術時代絵巻” (a period scroll of mixed martial arts), the story is set in “Hinomoto” — a fictionalized Japan — ten years after Oda Nobunaga unified the country. Sensing his own death approaching, Nobunaga suddenly declares a tournament called “Tenkaichi,” a proxy war in which he will cede control of the nation to whichever warlord fields the strongest martial artist. Ambitious generals across the land enter their mightiest warriors in pursuit of ultimate power. The manga runs in Monthly Young Magazine (Kodansha), with Volume 14 set to go on sale on August 20.

Nakamaru Yōsuke (Original Story)

Ever since I heard about the anime adaptation, I’ve been eagerly looking forward to seeing what the visuals will look like. Let’s all get excited together waiting for the finished product — I can’t wait to see the flashy action and wild energy of the incredibly cool characters Azuma-sensei drew in the manga.

Satō Gen (Miyamoto Musashi)

To prepare for this role, I traveled to Kumamoto Prefecture to pay my respects at Musashi’s grave, studied his life at a museum, and visited Reigandō Cave, where he is said to have written the Book of Five Rings. I also lost approximately 15 kilograms to ensure my body and mind were at their peak during recording. I kept pushing myself with the self-suggestion that I was the most passionate actor for this role. It is a true honor to portray the legendary Miyamoto Musashi, and I gave everything I had. I guarantee your soul will tremble.

Matsuda Ken’ichirō (Honda Tadakatsu)

Honda Tadakatsu is known in actual history as a fierce general who never once suffered a wound, so I knew I couldn’t afford a half-hearted performance. I went in with the mindset that I was on a battlefield and didn’t mind if my voice gave out. Satō Gen’s Musashi was so extraordinary that I had to push myself to the limit just to keep up with him. I’m deeply grateful to be part of this anime, and I hope everyone enjoys it alongside us.

Horiuchi Ken’yū (Oda Nobunaga)

The idea of Nobunaga, in his final days, passing power to the strongest warrior — what a concept. I played him with an overwhelming sense of presence, while also conveying a certain unsettling madness. I’ve finished recording all episodes. The studio was filled with the same blazing intensity as the source material. Please follow along all the way to the final battle.

The teaser visual depicts Musashi and Tadakatsu on the verge of clashing in their first bout, with Nobunaga’s figure looming in the background. The teaser PV features Nobunaga’s declaration of the Tenkaichi tournament alongside glimpses of Musashi and the other warriors.
