The POKÉTOON short-anime series has unveiled its latest entry, Wartortle and the Rest of Summer (カメールと、夏のつづき), now streaming on the official Pokémon YouTube channel. The short was produced jointly by Studio Chromato and Studio Colorido.
Story
The short follows Rikuto, a boy who travels to a small island at the end of summer to visit his grandmother. There he encounters a long-lived Wartortle whose tail is a different colour from the one in the Pokédex and whose shell is covered in moss. It turns out this Wartortle has been a close friend of Rikuto’s father, Gaku, ever since Gaku was a child some 30 years ago — making the short a warm, nostalgic story of one summer’s memories.
Kana Hanazawa Voices Wartortle — Fans React
The standout casting surprise is Kana Hanazawa as the voice of Wartortle. Hanazawa shared her excitement on X, writing that she hoped fans would watch “this story during summer vacation.” The reveal sparked an enthusiastic response online, with fans saying they didn’t recognise her voice at first, calling it “the birth of the world’s cutest Wartortle,” and expressing joy that their favourite Pokémon was voiced by one of their favourite voice actors.
Yū Hatanaka also confirmed via X that he voices Gaku, Rikuto’s father.
