A livestreamed celebration of Detective Conan‘s 30th anniversary delivered two major announcements on Saturday, exciting fans of the long-running mystery franchise.
First-Ever Fan-Deduction Special: Misohitojima no Satsujin
A brand-new original anime special titled Misohitojima no Satsujin (The Misohitojima Murder Case) was officially revealed. For the first time in the franchise’s history, viewers will be invited to deduce the culprit themselves as the story unfolds.
Director Yasuichirō Yamamoto conceived the concept and personally drew rough illustrations of the titular island and its story setting. The script comes from Takahiro Ōkura, a frequent contributor to the Detective Conan franchise who also wrote Lupin the 3rd Part 6.
Two-Hour Special Airs September 25 — First in a Decade
The anniversary stream also confirmed that Detective Conan: 30-gō Satsujin Jiken (The Counterfeit Case of Ultra 30) will air on NTV and its affiliates during the “Kinyō Roadshow” programming block — normally reserved for theatrical films — on September 25 at 9:00 p.m. JST. It marks the franchise’s first two-hour television special in ten years.
Actress Elaiza Ikeda, known for her live-action roles in Doronjo and Sadako, will appear as a guest voice cast member.
In the special, Conan and his companions face a national-scale threat: the circulation of counterfeit currency. Their investigation takes them to the National Printing Bureau in Nagano, before Conan and Heiji head to Osaka, where the fake bills are believed to have been printed.
About Detective Conan
Gōshō Aoyama launched the manga in Shogakukan’s Weekly Shounen Sunday in 1994. It has since spawned a television anime running continuously since January 1996 and an accompanying film series. Viz Media publishes the English manga under the title Case Closed, the name originally coined by Funimation for its dub.
The story follows Conan Edogawa, the alias of teenage detective Shinichi Kudo, whose body was shrunk after he was poisoned. Alongside detective Kogoro Mori and his daughter Ran, Conan assists the police in cracking complex cases.
